This role supports a high-quality rheumatology practice by creating an efficient patient flow and a welcoming, compassionate environment. The Medical Assistant combines clinical and administrative responsibilities to ensure timely, professional, and empathetic care for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Record patients’ medical history, vital signs, and clinical information such as test results in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, ensuring they remain neat, clean, and fully stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, and height.
  • Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician or advanced practice provider.
  • Provide medically appropriate instructions to patients under the direction of a physician or advanced practice provider.
  • Ensure all relevant patient information, documentation, and results are entered into the electronic health record prior to appointments.
  • Prepare and process FMLA forms, prior authorizations, disability paperwork, referral documents, lab requests, and prescription refill requests.
  • Manage daily schedule workflows by scheduling new and follow-up appointments in the scheduling software.
  • Collaborate closely with other medical assistants and ancillary staff to support seamless patient care and clinic operations.
  • Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, providers, and coworkers by following established standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
  • Apply knowledge of office medical procedures and treatments to support clinical care.
  • Use strong computer skills and medical software to document care, manage tasks, and support patient scheduling.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and composure in high-stress situations while managing multiple changing priorities.
  • Report to and communicate effectively with the Medical Assistant Supervisor regarding workflow, issues, and process improvements.

Requirements

  • GED or high school diploma.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant, including back-office documentation such as prescription refills, lab requests, FMLA forms, referral paperwork, and related tasks.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic health records (EHR); Epic experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in patient care tasks, including obtaining vital signs such as blood pressure, and familiarity with infectious disease precautions.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and office medical procedures and treatments.
  • Understanding of insurance and managed care operations, as well as EMR and scheduling software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse patient population.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort working with medical software and electronic documentation.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and compassionate demeanor in high-stress situations, managing stress with grace and composure.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized manner.
  • High level of attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and following legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • National Medical Assistant certification is highly preferred; candidates may be in the process of obtaining certification within 30–60 days.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credentials are beneficial.
  • Experience working in Epic or similar EMR/EHR platforms.
  • Demonstrated enjoyment in providing compassionate care to patients experiencing complex or challenging health conditions.
  • Interest in growing knowledge of medical, organizational, and administrative practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use critical thinking in day-to-day patient care activities.

Work Environment

This role is based in a rheumatology practice located in Salem, Oregon, serving patients from the surrounding Willamette Valley. The clinic focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and related conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, gout, vasculitis, scleroderma, and other complex rheumatologic disorders. The practice is physician-owned and emphasizes efficient, high-quality, and compassionate care in an outpatient setting.

The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch break, providing a consistent daytime workweek. Medical Assistants work in a modern clinical environment that relies heavily on electronic medical records and scheduling software, with Epic as the preferred platform. The setting involves close collaboration with board-certified physicians, advanced practice providers, other medical assistants, and ancillary staff. The clinic maintains a professional, respectful, and patient-centered culture, with a strong emphasis on safety, confidentiality, and adherence to established clinical and legal standards.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $22.32 - $29.72 per hour.

Schedule
