Medic

About the role

The Medic (referring to both nurses and doctors) is responsible for providing medical services in accordance with good medical practice and applicable rules and regulations. The Medic oversees all aspects of health management and support, including primary care and trauma care, and reports to the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) on medical cases that could affect safety on the rig or require mandatory reporting.

Responsibilities

• Primary Care
  • Provide primary care for all workers, including diagnosing and managing routine medical conditions and minor injuries.
  • Supervise the physical and mental health of all crew on board.
  • Discuss significant medical cases with the Topside Doctor; summon emergency medical support and lead evacuation preparations in accordance with the rig’s Medical Emergency Response Plan (MERP).
  • Provide follow-up treatment for injuries and illnesses where evacuation is not required.
  • Conduct accurate clinical assessments and examinations.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate medical records for all workers.
  • Report medical treatments as required (Medical Treatment Cases, Restricted Work Cases, First Aid Cases, Lost Time Injury Cases).
  • Ensure immunization recommendations are understood and implemented by the workforce.
  • Recommend applicable health regulatory requirements.
• Trauma Care and Emergency Planning
  • Recommend medical aspects of Medical Emergency Response Plans.
  • Perform assessment and immediate treatment of serious illness or injury.
  • Refer patients when treatment exceeds the Medic’s scope and resources; consult with Topside Doctors for emergency evacuation.
  • Travel with patients to the nearest approved medical facility if necessary.
  • Provide functional leadership during emergency medical delivery and mass casualty scenarios.
  • Fulfill emergency responsibilities as per the Station Bill and Emergency Response Manual.
  • Identify and document a triage area for multiple casualties in the Emergency Response Manual.
  • Ensure critical medical supplies and equipment are pre-packed and available for emergencies.
  • Participate in drills.
• Maintenance of Clinic and Medical Equipment
  • Decide on appropriate resources to manage ill health and injury.
  • Maintain a clean, hygienic, and accessible clinic.
  • Keep records of clinic stock, including a Controlled Drugs Register and inventory.
  • Ensure stock levels are maintained and medicines are in date per flag state requirements.
  • Comply with legal and professional standards for storage, dispensing, administration, and disposal of medications.
  • Ensure equipment is well-labeled according to Noble Drilling requirements.
  • Monitor and maintain medical facilities, stretchers, first aid points, and eyewash stations.
  • Maintain records of medical equipment checks.
• Hygiene Inspections
  • Participate in weekly hygiene inspections per the Noble Management System.
  • Follow up on hygiene reports to close out non-conformances.
  • Ensure food storage and preparation meet Noble standards.
  • Verify that food handlers are medically fit for duty.
  • Alert the OIM about outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness related to food or water.
• First Aid Training and Medical Emergency Response Planning
  • Provide regular first aid training, including CPR, for Medical Emergency Response Teams and First Aid Personnel.
  • Arrange periodic simulated exercises and drills.
  • Coordinate and supervise the Medical/First Aid Team during emergencies.
  • Maintain records of first aid training and team readiness.
  • Ensure first aid equipment is regularly checked and maintained.
• Health Campaigns and Occupational Health
  • Act as on-site safety personnel and part of the occupational health service organization.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle in line with Noble policies (e.g., manual handling and ergonomics training).
  • Advise the workforce on health and well-being matters.
  • Monitor the work environment and occupational health of employees.
• Environmental Health
  • Conduct regular water testing and forward samples to laboratories per CMMS requirements.
  • Ensure proper disposal of clinical waste in compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Implement control measures for vector-borne diseases with unit management.
  • Register chemicals that may pose health hazards and inform the OIM of dangerous substances.
  • Provide guidance on chemical handling for Noble and catering crew.
• Additional Tasks
  • Assist with control of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Support investigation of injury cases involving personnel.
  • Perform administrative tasks (e.g., assisting with inductions, 3C observation program, POB management, flight planning).
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation.
• Authority
  • Apply Stop Work Authority when deemed unsafe to continue.
• Documentation and Record Responsibilities
  • Check and record all chemicals, products, and substances that may create health hazards; file Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Prepare and forward reports (e.g., accident reports, drug accounts, hygiene reports, working environment records).
  • Record all consultations and dispensing of medicines in a Medical Logbook; maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain a list of medical equipment and medicines.
  • Provide hand-over notes.

Requirements

• Medical license for the country where the unit is operating.
• 2 years of offshore experience.
• Knowledge of occupational health and work hygiene.
• Administrative and computer skills.
• Understanding of the role as an occupational health worker.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills at all levels.
• Fluent in spoken and written English and Scandinavian.
• Safety training courses and medical certificate as required by the continental shelf authority for the operating area.
• Training as per the Noble Training Matrix or as designated.
• Additional competencies (e.g., specialty in anesthesia, operating room, or emergency department experience) may be required by the client.

Additional Responsibilities

• Order necessary medical items to maintain adequate stock in cooperation with the OIM.
• Perform health and hygiene inspections at regular intervals.
• Participate in crew training programs.
• Conduct duties in a manner that safeguards safety and health.
• Cooperate in enhancing safety standards and environmental procedures.
