About the role

The Media Secondary Library Assistant position is a 180-day contract role.

Responsibilities

  • Affords support to the instructional program at assigned secondary schools by identifying resource materials and equipment for use in classrooms and assignments.
  • Conducts classes and activities in various formats to promote the use and enjoyment of literature and technology.
  • Establishes positive relationships with students to create a comfortable, safe, and supportive learning environment.
  • Evaluates books and periodicals to ensure they are retained within the collection, such as repairing damaged items and recommending retirement of outdated materials.
  • Maintains materials inventory and collection to provide an up-to-date reference and ensure materials are available when needed.
  • Maintains a safe environment within the Library Media Center by monitoring student activities.
  • Operates media production equipment and systems to provide media production services.
  • Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc., to convey and gather information required to perform functions.
  • Performs routine maintenance and operating checks on media equipment to ensure its availability for school site use.
  • Controls the use, location, and availability of items in the collection through circulation activities such as item check-in and check-out, preparing circulation counts, and generating overdue lists.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation and information for circulation, including manual and electronic documents and reports.
  • Processes library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials, such as logging into master files, barcoding, shelving, and producing required reports.
  • Manages new student library accounts, notices of missing, damaged, or overdue books, media and materials, and provides access to library resources while securing reimbursement for losses.
  • Encourages and promotes a love of reading and literacy through student enrichment experiences.
  • Researches various instructional materials and sources to support students in their classroom assignments.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, staff, and parents regarding book availability, finding reference documents, status of overdue fines, and other information.

Qualifications

  • Age 16+
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
