About the role

This position provides higher-level support for the Blood Bank-Clin Labs section, often involving specialized testing, Quality Assurance development, and/or the development and implementation of new procedures. Testing is routinely performed without supervision, and complex interpretation of results is required. The role reports to laboratory section leadership and works independently while collaborating closely with the technical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provides higher-level support for the laboratory section, including specialized testing, Quality Assurance development, and implementation of new procedures.
  • Performs testing independently and interprets complex results.
  • Keeps meticulous records of experimental methods, data, and conclusions.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and policies in collaboration with laboratory leadership.
  • Performs all duties of a Medical Technologist II and adheres to hospital and laboratory policies.
  • Communicates professionally with internal and external clients.
  • Assists and leads in the development of new methods and procedures as needed.
  • Trains technologists on new laboratory methods and instruments, ensuring compliance with accepted practices.
  • Maintains compliance documentation for technical, IT, quality, educational, and safety information.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots instrument performance.
  • Provides input into performance evaluations and competency checks for technologists, technicians, and other personnel.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field and 4 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist post-licensure, or
  • Master’s degree in related field and 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist post-licensure, or
  • PhD in related field and 1 year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist post-licensure, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Technologist NYS upon hire required, or
  • Histotechnologist (HTL) NYS, restricted to Histology Lab upon hire required.
