Blood Bank Supervisor/Medical Technologist

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of medical technologists, technicians, and laboratory assistants in the blood bank.
  • Oversee the testing of blood donations for ABO blood group, Rh factor, and infectious diseases.
  • Ensure blood products are properly labeled, stored, and maintained in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Manage blood inventory levels and ensure proper rotation of blood products.
  • Collaborate with physicians and medical staff to ensure timely and accurate blood product availability.
  • Implement and monitor quality control programs to ensure compliance with FDA, AABB, and other regulatory standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all blood product testing, processing, and distribution.
  • Ensure all staff follow infection control and safety protocols in blood collection, handling, and storage.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of training programs for laboratory staff.
  • Perform periodic audits and prepare for regulatory inspections.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or an equivalent accrediting body.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a blood bank or clinical laboratory setting, with at least 1-2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of FDA, AABB, and CLIA regulations and standards.
  • Certification in Blood Banking (BB or SBB) preferred.

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills to manage and mentor laboratory staff.
  • In-depth knowledge of blood bank operations, transfusion medicine, and laboratory testing procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in ensuring accurate blood product testing and record-keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to urgent medical situations.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with medical staff, patients, and laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.
