Med Tech Section Leader | 2nd Chemistry Lead/Phlebotomy

Description Of Position

The Laboratory Section Leader directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in performing tests in Hematology, Chemistry, Send outs, Blood Bank and Microbiology. SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology

Responsibilities

• Ensures staff has knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to complete job responsibilities.
• Evaluates staff for competency.
• Schedules staff ensuring adequate coverage.
• Maintains equipment maintenance, including service contracts to ensure routine and preventative maintenance is done according to schedule.
• Aids Laboratory Director in maintaining 100% productivity.
• Controls overtime in section.
• Controls cost as related to section needs.
• Aids Laboratory Director in maintaining budgets.
• Participates in CAP proficiency testing program and attains acceptable proficiency results.
• Participates in various hospital committees.
• Reviews test results to ensure quality control.
• Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Collaborates in education and training programs for medical technology students and personnel.
• Assigns workers to duties and oversees performance of tests in fields of microbiology, chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, serology and immunohematology.

Requirements

• Education and Work Experience: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university OR Associates Degree plus 4 years experience required. Associate’s degree is acceptable for Moderately Complex sections only. Successful completion of a one-year internship in medical technology. Active CLS License from LSBME. Preferred four years of clinical laboratory experience. One year experience required.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• Mental competence and alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements; clear, concise, pleasant speaking abilities; accurate hearing is essential; visual acuity is a must; stability of emotional make up is essential.
