About the Role

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for safely performing mechanical repairs, replacements, and adjustments on heavy industrial equipment such as fans, pumps, gear drives, and compressors. This role involves troubleshooting equipment performance, supporting plant safety and environmental goals, and participating in the callout program with overtime as required. The position reports to the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor and operates on a swing shift (3 p.m.–11 p.m.) when needed.

Hourly pay ranges from $31.78 (entry-level) to $40.42 (with a minimum of 5 years of related experience), based on the Tronox Mechanical Maintenance Skills Test and prior experience.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate general knowledge and use of hand tools, including drill presses, band saws, welders, torches, pipe threading machines, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Rebuild, repair, and install rotary equipment such as pumps, fans, valves, filters, and gear/belt drives.
  • Maintain knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for assigned Job Qualification Requirements (JQRs).
  • Read, interpret, and fabricate from blueprints.
  • Support safe and reliable plant operations through preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on rotating and stationary equipment.
  • Collaborate with maintenance leadership, operations, and engineering to diagnose and resolve mechanical issues.
  • Follow site safety procedures, mechanical integrity standards, and maintenance best practices.
  • Use precision measurement tools for detailed inspections to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Perform core mechanical tasks, including precision alignment, belt/sheave alignment, flange makeup, bearing installation, packing installation, and tubing makeup.
  • Train and qualify in specialized mechanical skills (e.g., crane operation, welding, pipe fitting, machining, fiberglass repair, or equipment-specific rebuilds) based on departmental needs.
  • Complete all required compliance, safety, and skills training for the role.
  • Consistently demonstrate Tronox core values.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One of the following:
    • Certificate or Associate’s degree in a related discipline and 1 year of maintenance experience, or
    • Successful completion of the Tronox Internship Program, or
    • 3 years of mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial environment, or
    • 5 years of production experience at Tronox.
  • Score of 75 or higher on the Mechanical Maintenance Skills Test.
  • Professional communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Basic understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Strong grasp of general maintenance processes and methods.
  • For internal candidates: Completion of the Tronox Maintenance Training Curriculum, an MX or above on the most recent performance evaluation, and no active corrective actions.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be clean-shaven in areas where facial hair could interfere with respirator fit and seal (no beards, sideburns, or excessive growth).
  • Occasional climbing of ladders, stairs, scaffolding, or ramps, and movement in various positions to perform tasks.
  • Occasional operation of heavy machinery, power tools, or motor vehicles.
  • Frequent walking long distances between worksites and working in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Regular lifting or moving of objects up to 50 pounds or more in all directions.
