About the Role

The Shipboard Systems Mechanical Engineer designs, tests, troubleshoots, and implements systems that satisfy specific customer requirements relating to a shipboard environment. These systems include L3Harris and vendor equipment with mechanical, electrical, and computing components that must integrate into an operational system that passes system tests. Since these systems incorporate technology of a sensitive nature, U.S. citizenship is required. A portion of the position involves testing and physical manipulation of equipment, requiring minimum personal mobility capabilities (ability to traverse a ladder, lift/carry at least 35 lbs., perform light mechanical modification tasks such as working with hand tools, drills, etc.).

The successful candidate will work closely with experienced engineers, gaining oversight and task assignments as experience is built. The role involves significant exposure to vendors and external customers, requiring effective communication with a diverse audience. Understanding and adhering to established procedures, documenting results, and general computer literacy are key. Occasional travel is required. As knowledge of L3Harris systems grows, increased accountability, independence, and enthusiasm for branching into new areas will be expected for career growth.

Requirements

  • Mechanical bachelor’s degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience (OR) Graduate degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance
  • Practical hands-on experience with technical systems, including mechanical design and/or testing with a working knowledge of material properties (geometry, strength, bending/welding, etc.)
  • Ability to traverse a ladder, lift/carry at least 35 lbs., and perform light mechanical tasks (e.g., using hand tools, drills)
  • General computer literacy
  • Occasional travel

Preferred Skills

  • 3+ years of technical experience in mechanical design, mechanical CAD, mechanical testing, or related field
  • Able to work within a cross-functional team environment with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication (English)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent project tasks and prioritize them appropriately
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate issues for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Leadership skills, including customer focus, change management, teamwork, diversity, and integrity
  • Self-motivated team player, able to set priorities and manage deadlines
  • Ability to obtain Sec+ Certification

Pay

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in Virginia is $80,500 to $149,500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.

Schedule

9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days—totaling 80 hours worked—and have every other Friday off.
