About the Role
S&B is seeking a Mechanical Specialist to independently perform Mechanical Design activities for all phases of general equipment designs on projects of moderate size and complexity. The role requires full competence in conventional aspects of Mechanical Design, including evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard design methods and procedures. Responsibilities include generating scope estimate packages, priced equipment lists, work-hour estimates, staffing plans, and project schedule details for mechanical engineering deliverables, as well as monitoring progress against schedules and budgets.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide technical and schedule guidance for engineering design personnel on specific project scopes.
- Deliver performance feedback for engineering design personnel assigned to projects.
Responsibilities
- Prepare basic design sketches and perform calculations in support of broader design activities for equipment, components, structures, or systems.
- Conduct field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information.
- Gather data to prepare equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions for approval.
- Evaluate vendors' bids and drawings to ensure compliance with specifications for simple equipment and specialty items.
- Participate in the preparation of equipment lists and specialty item lists, including details for fixed and rotating equipment.
- Review design guides and specifications.
- Prepare equipment data sheets and priced equipment lists for estimates.
- Develop work-hour estimates for project scopes and engineering deliverables.
- Participate in preparing project schedules for mechanical engineering tasks, including upstream/downstream ties to other disciplines.
- Monitor and report progress of mechanical engineering tasks against the project schedule.
- Develop staffing plans for managing project scope and direct engineering staff to complete activities.
- Interpret engineering Codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API for simple rotating equipment).
- Apply working knowledge of welding procedures, materials selection, and nondestructive examination.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) from an ABET-accredited program.
- Five to seven (5–7) years of experience in mechanical design or a related functional area.
- Proficiency in engineering and design tools, including CAD software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience interpreting engineering Codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API recommended practices for fixed/rotating equipment).
- Understanding of equipment engineering activities for fixed or rotating equipment.
- Ability to integrate engineering deliverables into project schedules and assess impacts on preceding/following activities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) for collaboration across disciplines.
- Comfortable providing direct tasking to technical staff and interfacing with discipline leads, project managers, and clients.
- Capability to present technical and non-technical data to peers, stakeholders, clients, and design review teams.
- Skill in interpreting and applying technical and non-technical data, including charts, graphs, design codes, and engineering theories.
Qualifications
- Completion of NCEES FE Examination (preferred).
- Actively working toward obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) License (preferred).
- Experience with automated engineering and design equipment.
Travel
Less than 10% occasional travel required.

- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.

Mathematical Skills
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry.

- Occasional field trips to operating plants or construction sites, requiring normal hearing, standing, walking, reaching, climbing, and balancing.
- Clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
- Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
Work Environment
- Primary work environment is a business office with moderate noise.
- Occasional visits or temporary assignments to operating plants or construction sites, which may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles.
