The North Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking dedicated professionals to shape the future of transportation. This role plays a vital part in creating safe, efficient, and innovative transportation solutions for communities across the state.
Responsibilities
- Perform complete engine repairs and overhauls.
- Perform engine tune-ups (replace injectors, adjust valves, etc.).
- Perform drive train repairs (adjust, replace clutch, repair transmissions and differentials).
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic and air brake problems (valves, chambers, brake shoes, drum and lines).
- Diagnose and repair exhaust, cooling and AC systems.
- Repair chassis and suspension systems.
- Diagnose and repair electronic and electrical systems.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems.
- Order parts, restock parts, and organize. Keep track of and reorder hydraulic parts, cylinders, hose and fitting as needed.
- Perform major and minor welding repair on trucks and shop equipment. Weld and Fabricate parts while operating shop equipment. Design and Construct welding projects throughout the district.
- Engine repairs and tune-ups.
- Drive train, chassis and suspension, diagnose and repairs.
- Brake overhauls and repairs.
- Diagnose and repair electronic and electrical problems.
- Repair heating and air conditioning problems.
- Install equipment on new vehicles.
Requirements
- Class B Driver License.
- Two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology.
- Two years of work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity as those listed in the summary of work.
- Three-year master technology program and one year of work experience performing duties listed in the summary of work can substitute for the 2-year curriculum and 2 years of experience.
- Class A permit by the first day of employment, completed a two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology.
- 12 months to take the behind-the-wheel exam and get the class A driver’s license with air brakes and with a cargo-tank endorsement. The district will make the equipment available for the employee to practice driving during this time.
- A high school diploma or GED, and a valid Class D Drivers license.
Qualifications
- Work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity to those to be performed on vehicles and equipment like those to be serviced may be substituted for the educational requirement of the basis of one year of work experience for one year of education.
- Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) reflecting the required abilities for this position may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis. Related MOS codes include Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (91B), Mission Generation Vehicular Equipment Maintenance (2T3X1).
Skills
- Knowledge of and capability to weld.
- May be required to plow snow.

Pay
NDDOT Starting Salary for Mechanic III: $5,354 per month
NDDOT Starting Salary for Mechanic II: $4,819 per month
NDDOT Starting Salary for Mechanic I: $4,337 per month
