Mechanical Estimator

About the role

A Mechanical Estimator prepares and presents all levels of estimates and proposals—lump-sum bids, unit costs, and quantities—for a diverse portfolio of field and pre-fabrication construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and present lump-sum bids, proposals, unit costs, and quantities for various projects.
• Consult with clients, procurement, subcontractors, and vendors to discuss and resolve estimate issues.
• Interface with Procurement and Operations to secure support and commitment to cost estimates.
• Analyze historical data and recommend improvements to cost-estimating procedures to reduce discrepancies.
• Identify cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
• Analyze completed projects to compare estimated vs. actual costs and determine reasons for discrepancies.
• Ensure compliance with estimating methodology and produce quality estimates.
• Review DOR completion, assignments, estimating quantities, and project scope.
• Review small and disadvantaged business solicitations and evaluations.
• Review subcontractor solicitations, quotes, RFP compliance, clarifications, exceptions, and evaluations.
• Identify gaps and overlaps in the scope of work within project documents.
• Assemble material and labor costs for clients and proposals.
• Conduct solicitation and pre-qualification tasks for small, disadvantaged businesses, and subcontractors.
• Analyze and insert specialty and standard equipment/material pricing into estimates.
• Prepare and deliver bid packages to subcontractors.
• Present estimating information and attend pre-bid meetings.
• Conduct subcontractor labor and market studies; make recommendations based on results.
• Develop project summary schedules.
• Evaluate and condition subcontractor and supplier quotes.
• Develop and present estimating strategy and plan.
• Provide preliminary pricing for indirect and general conditions.
• Evaluate fee, contingency, and escalation; make recommendations.
• Review plans and specifications for risk issues and propose mitigation strategies.
• Review commercial terms and conditions with legal counsel for cost and risk items; present concerns to lead estimator.
• Ensure accuracy and validity of estimate clarifications and assumptions.
• Analyze and price value engineering for submission.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Comply with all company policies and standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field and 3+ years of direct project estimating experience.
• Applicable experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with software such as Quotesoft, Accubid, Oracle, and PowerBI is desired.
• Thorough knowledge of company procedures, estimating techniques, various construction disciplines, and cost control systems.
