Tessenderlo Kerley, Inc. is a company of diverse businesses unified by shared values and vision, serving the agriculture, mining, industrial, and water reclamation markets worldwide. The Mechanical Engineer / Quality Control works integrally with internal and external clients to design, specify, and support the fabrication, installation, and operation of mechanical equipment while maintaining responsibility for the Project Services Quality Control Program. This role serves as a hands-on Mechanical Engineer II with formal authority for quality control and ASME Code compliance for shop-fabricated and field-installed equipment, supporting projects from early design through fabrication, construction, and commissioning.
Mechanical Engineering Responsibilities
- Design vessels and mechanical equipment while considering the impact on instrumentation, relief devices, piping, valves, foundations, and structural steel.
- Perform ASME code calculations for shop-built vessels and applicable piping in accordance with ASME Section I, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, API 650, API 620, and ASME B31.1 requirements, using CEI and/or Codeware/Compress software as well as hand calculations.
- Review engineering drawings for conformance with applicable codes, design standards, and company specifications.
- Prepare project-specific piping, material, and equipment specifications.
- Prepare and approve scopes of work and specifications for mechanical activities including vessel lifts and demolitions, insulation, refractory installation, and specialty construction work.
- Review and approve equipment lists, valve lists, and P&IDs for consistency, mechanical integrity, and alignment with specifications and supporting documents.
- Maintain master P&IDs with redlines and communicate changes across disciplines and departments.
- Prepare Procurement Request Forms (PRFs) and support procurement activities including bid evaluations, vendor selection, and delivery reviews.
- Review vendor drawings, data, and final documentation packages (VDRs, MDBs) for compliance and completeness.
- Perform vendor and field inspections, witness hydrostatic and other required testing, and prepare inspection reports.
- Respond to Material Receiving Inspection Reports (MRIRs) and resolve technical nonconformances using sound engineering judgment.
- Provide mechanical engineering support to operating plants, construction activities, and small capital projects.
- Assist with project estimates, schedules, and budgets and provide support to project management as needed.
- Travel to project and fabrication sites to support engineering, construction, and quality activities.
- Drive engineering and fabrication performance against quality, safety, and compliance objectives by ensuring adherence to HS&E standards, ASME Code requirements, and company specifications throughout design, fabrication, inspection, and installation activities.
- Partner cross-functionally with Engineering, Project Management, Fabrication, Procurement, Construction, Operations, HS&E, and Quality Control personnel to coordinate technical requirements, resolve design or fabrication issues, and support safe, efficient execution from design through commissioning.
- Provide clear, timely technical communication and documentation to management, inspectors, and project stakeholders regarding engineering decisions, quality status, nonconformances, and compliance risks, proactively addressing impacts to safety, constructability, cost, or schedule.
Quality Control Program Leadership Responsibilities
- Maintain and administer the Project Services Quality Control Program in accordance with ASME ‘S’, ‘U’, and ‘R’ stamp certification requirements.
- Maintain the Quality Control Manual, ASME Code files, National Board number log, NBIC repair log, and required letters to file.
- Coordinate Authorized Inspector (AI) activities, third-party NDE, and required inspections; maintain associated reports, procedures, and qualifications.
- Maintain welder qualifications, welding procedure qualifications (WPQs), continuity logs, and supervisory inspector qualifications.
- Qualify new welders and welding procedures as required.
- Perform quality control reviews of engineering, design, procurement, and fabrication documentation.
- Create and maintain fabrication travelers, weld maps, Nonconformance Reports (NCRs), and QC logs.
- Oversee material receiving inspections, verify material test reports (MTRs), stampings, dimensions, and material control markings for ASME code materials.
- Supervise, direct, and provide backup support for quality control inspectors as required.
- Maintain required qualifications for company-appointed Responsible Charge Engineers and Quality Control Inspectors, including annual reviews and vision exams.
