Mechanical Engineer – Mid Level (Hybrid)
The Role
Barr is seeking a mechanical engineer to join our team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Engineering and Design business unit, working with multidisciplinary project teams to serve industrial clients in the mining, power generation, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors. You will use your expertise to develop and review engineering calculations, system specifications, and construction drawings; select equipment and components; and guide project execution from concept to bid packages. You will contribute to technical reports, cost estimates, proposals, and client-facing documentation that support critical infrastructure investments.
Impact – Key Responsibilities
- Technical knowledge: mining/mineral process systems and facility design; slurry and process water pumping and piping, conveyors, bulk material handling, and plate-work design; crushers, screens, grinding, separation, and enrichment process mechanical integration; process equipment installation and mechanical layout design; design of industrial dust collection systems, machinery, and repairs to large mechanical equipment; and retrofit of mechanical systems for plant expansions or improvements.
- Project management: planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.
- Field presence: construction observation and surveying as needed. Serve as lead mechanical engineer or project manager for large capital projects within industries.
About The Opportunity
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Hibbing, Minnesota, office. Travel expectation: up to 15% domestic fieldwork, with an average of one day every two weeks during projects to verify dimensions and project progress.

Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to work in locations that include rough terrain typical of construction outdoor sites with limited accessibility and moving machinery.
About You – Required Core Competencies
- Education: bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university
- Experience: 5+ years or relevant experience
- Willingness and ability to regularly travel
- Software: familiarity with Autodesk design suite, Microsoft Office software, and computer simulation modeling
- Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Helpful Additional Experience (not Required)
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification strongly preferred or the ability to obtain
Compensation
Anticipated range of $89,300–$108,800 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
