About the role

The Mechanical Engineer IV focuses on the design and engineering of HVAC and mechanical utilities for buildings. This position oversees the Mechanical discipline scope of work, manages the discipline budget across all project phases, sizes, and levels of complexity, and coordinates with internal and external architects, engineers, clients, construction managers, subcontractors, vendors, and manufacturers.

Typical tasks and deliverables executed by or under the supervision of the Mechanical Engineer IV include:

  • Site selection and master planning
  • Commissioning and startup
  • Load calculations and utility assessments
  • Energy modeling and design reports
  • Code evaluations
  • Plans, P&IDs, schedules, and HAZOP reviews
  • Installation details
  • Equipment and system selection and specification
  • Coordination with manufacturers and trade partners
  • Directing design activities for studies, conceptual and schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration

Responsibilities

  • Interface with clients and external partners
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, designers, and other team members to ensure coordinated, constructible, and complete designs
  • Work with a Project Manager on proposal development, task identification, man-hour planning, and project scheduling for mechanical scope
  • Conduct and lead field surveys of existing conditions and support field reporting
  • Identify and resolve intermediate non-compliant existing conditions during site walks and construction field surveys
  • Develop narratives, reports, and construction drawing packages; write construction specifications for large, advanced-complexity projects with no oversight
  • Provide lead and advanced support for construction activities such as RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development, and construction progress reports
  • Conduct quality checking of documents for intermediate complex projects and drive overall project quality
  • Utilize platforms like Microsoft Office and BIM software to execute work
  • Mentor less experienced Mechanical Engineers and/or Designers
  • Lead advanced project system design programming, master planning, and a team of mechanical staff in executing advanced projects

Requirements

  • ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (with a mechanical focus)
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience
  • Professional Engineer registration in good standing
  • Advanced experience with engineering calculations and developing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping systems designs
  • Advanced experience with mechanical/plumbing/fire/building code application

Skills

  • Life Sciences (Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Laboratory) or Food & Beverage industry experience (preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of GMP manufacturing environments (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design accreditation or experience (preferred)
  • Intermediate experience with industry standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA, etc.)
  • Advanced experience conducting and leading field surveys and field reporting
  • Advanced experience in plumbing design
  • Basic experience using Revit plugins such as Enscape and Unifi
  • Basic experience building parametric workflows using Dynamo, Grasshopper, and/or Rhino within Revit
  • Proficient with advanced cross-discipline project team coordination
  • Proficient with advanced coordination with construction trade partners, vendors, and manufacturers
  • Intermediate experience troubleshooting mechanical systems
  • Ability to develop intermediate internal mechanical design and engineering training presentations
  • Ability to travel for client development, project execution, and training opportunities
