MECHANICAL ENGINEER IV
Marvin Engineering Co., a division of The Marvin Group, is a leading defense contractor specializing in the development and manufacturing of military aerospace and vehicle systems. Based in Southern California near Los Angeles International Airport, we serve as a trusted partner to the Department of Defense and global allies, collaborating with major military prime contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon.
About the role
This position supports the development and documentation of mechanical systems, including design, maintenance, and modification of system proposals to provide design documentation and high-level requirements. The role involves detail design development, spatial integration, and preparation of technical documents for mechanical components and systems. A strong background in aerospace manufacturing, design, and analysis—with an emphasis on pneumatic, mechanical, and electro-mechanical components—is required. Experience with airborne weapon systems and weapon carriage equipment is strongly desirable. The role operates under limited supervision.
Responsibilities
- Lead research of technical, operational, and quality issues that cannot be resolved by the customer.
- Assess and resolve product/process issues throughout the product lifecycle.
- Work with and direct cross-functional teams to conduct root cause analysis and develop dispositions for complex design non-conformances.
- Perform detailed design work, assembly layout, and creation of drawings and solid models in CATIA and/or provide analysis of engineering solutions.
- Oversee documentation of hardware-related issues.
- Support the development, maintenance, or modification of system, component, and installation designs/proposals to provide design documentation.
- Perform and document analyses to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications.
- Provide ongoing technical support of products in production.
- Design and review layouts of components, calculate stack-up of detail components, and prepare supporting documentation.
- Review completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
- Write technical reports and support conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design reviews to ensure designs meet internal and customer requirements.
- Support proposal preparation and new business development efforts.
- Lead and direct activities to validate and verify mechanical and system requirements.
- Train, coach, and mentor others.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 12 years of experience in a relevant design/analysis/development environment, preferably for military or commercial aviation.
- Knowledge of manufacturing of mechanical components and assemblies, with emphasis on complex electromechanical systems or large structures.
- Understanding of engineering processes and interactions between departments (e.g., design, test, software, avionics).
- Experience with manufacturing methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment), and aerospace requirements.
- Proficiency in design concepts and techniques (e.g., concurrent engineering, Design for Manufacture/Assembly [DFM/DFA]), including structural analysis by hand calculations and finite element methods.
- Experience with aerospace materials properties, selection, and processing, including heat treat and coatings.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in creating design concepts using CAD tools, preferably CATIA and PDM Smart Team.
- Proficient in creating detail drawings, assembly drawings, interface drawings, and source control drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.100.
- Proficient in Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) using ASME Y14.5 and stack-up analysis.
- Experience with 3D printing in PLA, composite, and/or metal is a plus.
- Basic measurement and inspection process proficiency.
- Knowledge of military standards and compliance rules under AS9100 and ITAR.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to write engineering reports documenting analysis and test results.
