About the role
The Mechanical Engineer IV focuses on the design and engineering of HVAC and mechanical utilities for buildings. The individual possesses demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex tasks, establish priorities and direct the work of others. This position is responsible for overseeing the Mechanical discipline scope of work and managing the discipline budget on all project phases, sizes and levels of complexity, and coordinating with internal and external architects and engineers, as well as clients, construction managers, subcontractors, vendors and manufacturers.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the Mechanical discipline scope of work and manage the discipline budget on all project phases, sizes, and levels of complexity.
- Coordinate with internal and external architects, engineers, clients, construction managers, subcontractors, vendors, and manufacturers.
- Direct design activities for studies, conceptual and schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
- Execute or supervise tasks and deliverables including site selection, master planning, commissioning and startup, load calculations, utility assessments, energy modeling, design reports, code evaluations, plans, P&IDs, schedules, HAZOP reviews, installation details, equipment and system selection and specification.
- Interface with clients and external partners; work closely with other architects, engineers, designers, and team members to ensure coordinated, constructible, and complete designs.
- Work with a Project Manager on proposal development, task identification, man-hour planning, and project scheduling for the mechanical scope of work.
- Conduct and lead field surveys of existing conditions and support field reporting; identify and resolve intermediate non-compliant existing conditions during site walks and construction field surveys.
- Develop narratives, reports, construction drawing packages, and write construction specifications on large projects of advanced complexity with no oversight.
- Provide lead and advanced support of construction activities such as RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development, and construction progress reports.
- Conduct quality checking of documents for intermediate complex projects (e.g., technical verification of design calculations and documentation) and drive overall project quality.
- Utilize platforms such as Microsoft Office products and BIM software to execute work.
- Mentor less experienced Mechanical Engineers and/or Designers.
- Lead advanced project system design programming and master planning with support from Senior Engineer.
- Lead a team of mechanical staff in the execution of advanced projects discipline design and engineering.
Requirements
- ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (with a mechanical focus).
- Minimum of 10 years of experience.
- Professional Engineer registration in good standing.
- Advanced experience with performing engineering calculations, and developing and implementing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping systems designs.
- Advanced experience with using and applying the mechanical/plumbing/fire/building code.
Skills
- Life Sciences (Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Laboratory) or Food & Beverage industry experience (preferred).
- Advanced knowledge of GMP manufacturing environments (preferred).
- Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD (preferred).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (preferred).
- LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design accreditation or experience (preferred).
- Intermediate experience with industry standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA, etc.) (preferred).
- Advanced experience conducting and leading field surveys of existing conditions and support of field reporting (preferred).
- Advanced experience in plumbing design (preferred).
- Basic experience using Revit plugins such as Enscape and Unifi (preferred).
- Basic experience building parametric workflows using Dynamo, Grasshopper, and/or Rhino within Revit (preferred).
- Proficient with advanced internal and external cross-discipline project team coordination (preferred).
- Proficient with advanced coordination with construction trade partners, vendors, and manufacturers (preferred).
- Intermediate experience with troubleshooting issues with mechanical systems (preferred).
- Ability to develop intermediate internal mechanical design and engineering training presentations (preferred).
- Ability to travel for client development, project execution, and internal and external training opportunities.
