Mechanical Engineer I (Onsite)
Location: US-RI-PORTSMOUTH-PS2 ~ 1847 W Main Rd ~ NIMITZ SOUTH BLDG, Onsite. U.S. citizenship required; active and transferable U.S. government security clearance required prior to start date.
About the role
At RTX, the world's largest aerospace and defense company, 185,000 great minds are united by purpose and inspired to make a difference solving the world’s most complex problems. With three market‑leading businesses, world‑class operations and investments in R&D, RTX offers capabilities and opportunity no one else can. Together, we push the boundaries of known science and find new ways to connect and protect our world. Raytheon brings more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat, delivering solutions that help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression, creating a safer, more secure world.
Join the Raytheon Hardware Engineering Organization and contribute mechanical engineering expertise to mission‑critical defense systems across radar, missile, and command‑and‑control platforms. In this role, you will participate across the entire product lifecycle—from initial concept design and structural/thermal analysis to rapid prototyping, design verification testing, and factory support. Working in a collaborative, cross‑functional environment alongside systems, electrical, and manufacturing engineers, you will solve complex technical challenges to deliver robust, high‑reliability mechanical solutions. Occasional CONUS travel to customer sites or suppliers is generally required; international and longer‑duration travel assignments are available but optional.
Responsibilities
- Design, model, and document mechanical components, sub‑assemblies, and major end items in accordance with rigorous defense system requirements.
- Generate and maintain parametric 3D CAD models, complex assembly hierarchies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
- Validate design fit, form, and functionality through rapid prototyping, physical testing, and engineering simulations.
- Support factory operations, integration facilities, and external suppliers with product manufacturing, assembly, and integration.
- Participate actively in design peer reviews, resolve technical action items, and conduct trade studies to inform engineering decisions.
- Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary engineering teams to analyze and resolve mechanical hardware issues.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship required (only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance).
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance required prior to start date; ability to obtain an interim clearance is required.
Qualifications
Must Have
- Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline, to be obtained by start date.
- Experience utilizing parametric 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, Siemens NX) to generate 3D solid models, mechanical assemblies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
- Experience in mechanical design applied through coursework, academic research, engineering competition teams (e.g., Formula SAE, Baja, Robotics), or hands‑on projects.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- Knowledge or application of Geometric Dimensioning
