Primary Purpose
- The Mechanical Engineer will apply the principles of Mechanical Engineering, physics, and materials science for the practical application of design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of manufacturing systems for the optimization of equipment, procedures, and departmental budgets.
- The primary role of the mechanical engineer is to complement the engineering group in maintaining the highest standards for management of engineering functions to maintain and improve existing infrastructure and evolve with continuous improvement in the most effective ways practical.
- Align with the organization’s strategic objectives in the areas of environmental health and safety, asset capability, quality, and production.
Responsibilities
- Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions to facility systems.
- Provides direction to project, process, and maintenance of production equipment.
- Supports emergency troubleshooting, repairs, and corrections to facility and the facility’s equipment.
- Applies knowledge to rolling theories and other processing techniques.
- Provides design modifications to improve facility productivity, quality, process cost, and safety.
- Improves the level of preventive maintenance and equipment reliability.
- Applies knowledge of materials to determine suitability and advise with respect to structural integrity, strength, and durability to enhance facilities and equipment.
- Coordinates outage and construction activity with production and maintenance departments.
- Plans and supports installation of all process equipment for future modifications and overhauls.
- Assists in the preparation of comprehensive capital maintenance and capital investment projects.
- Works with the engineering group to ensure the reliability and maintainability of new installations meets and exceeds performance expectations.
- Reviews and manages vendor specifications and compiles technical evaluations to support procurement.
- Ensures compliance to national safety and engineering standards is met.
- Participates in the final check-out of new installations. This includes factory and site acceptance testing that will assure adherence to functional specifications.
- Ensures that condition and documentation preservation is performed.
- Participates in system functional performance testing.
- Identifies system manual requirements and ensures all documents are created.
- Understands and utilizes Reliability Centered Maintenance methods (development of Work Instructions, support Reliability Engineer and Techs, continuous improvement of equipment performance).
- Understands and utilizes Hydraulic Power Units and systems (able to read/ follow schematics, implement corrective actions, a solid understanding of the theories and good practices).
- Documents all baseline readings, settings, positions, and stores for future reference.
- Executes small to mid-size projects from inception to handover.
- Develops a clear understanding of equipment’s intended function, communicates this understanding to engineering and maintenance team.
- Carries out contractor coordination and contract management (writing Scope of Work, General Work Permits, Establishing Lock Out Tagout procedures, Reviewing Job Hazard Analysis, scheduling the work, etc.).
- Assists in the supervision of supplier interventions during installation, challenges solutions, and refines needs as necessary.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering.
- Some knowledge of materials (steel, concrete, asphalt, etc.) as it pertains to facilities and equipment maintenance.
- Solid understanding and experience with AutoCAD 2013 or later version.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software e.g. Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong problem-solving, judgment, and critical thinking skills.
- Aptitude for detailed work requiring a high degree of accuracy.
- Good communication, high level of autonomy, collaboration, and interpersonal skills are equally important.
- Provides technical support for the Engineering Department for Structural and Mechanical aspects of day-to-day engineering.
- Develops mechanical equipment systems and planned maintenance activities.
- Assists in training of other team members on mechanical standards and processes.

With its widest strip mill in the USA and a world-class recycling center, the site represents one of the largest sites within Constellium and is a world-class can recycling center, with the capacity to recycle nearly 20 billion cans per year. Muscle Shoals’ main product is aluminum can sheet for the packaging industry, particularly for beverage containers. It manufactures sheet used in all three components of an aluminum can, namely body stock, coated end stock, and tab stock. Additionally, Muscle Shoals’ supplies Auto Body Sheet substrate to Constellium’s Bowling Green, Kentucky, site.
