York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, transforming and enabling next-generation space mission operations worldwide. Today, York is one of the most innovative aerospace companies, specializing in end-to-end customer solutions and the rapid production of spacecraft platforms.
About the role
We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineer who can turn complex design requirements into an affordable-to-produce and easy-to-assemble design for high-rate production using manufacturing best practices. This role thrives in a fast-paced environment and involves exercising both engineering and CAD skills to advance design and industry standards. Aerospace-specific experience is desired but not required.
Responsibilities
- Engineer mechanical design solutions for both spacecraft flight hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE).
- Create designs with DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing/Assembly) with rate manufacturing in mind.
- Perform preliminary FEA, higher-level hand calculations, and fastener margins to ensure feasible designs.
- Create component drawings with appropriate GD&T that can be affordably produced.
- Develop assembly drawings, fabrication procedures, and build instructions in collaboration with the integration team.
- Coordinate across engineering teams on clean-sheet designs and design improvements.
- Interface directly with programs and end customers on high-level and detailed design needs and requirements.
- Coordinate with test engineers to prepare and execute test plans as the Mechanical Engineer responsible, performing root cause analyses if/when errors arise.
- Interface with suppliers to produce and optimize designs for cost and lead time.
- Support peers through checking and collaboration to ensure best practices are implemented on all products developed within the team.
Requirements
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited university.
- 0-2 years of experience as a mechanical design engineer is required.
- An internship experience with space vehicle design and/or ground support equipment is preferred.
- Moderate understanding of what is needed for high-quality mechanical systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Collaborative and effective in team environments.
- Experience with configuration control, the lifecycle of a design release, and PLM.
- Experience with materials, joints, bonding, and how these choices affect designs.
- Experience with manufacturing best practices for design tolerancing, fabrication methodologies, and assembly.
- Excellent SolidWorks (or similar) CAD skills.
- Demonstrates self-initiated work in a team environment with strong leadership skills.
- Must be able and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
- Willingness to work full-time in our Greenwood Village, CO office; this position does not support remote or hybrid work.
Qualifications (Bonus)
- Experience in the lifecycle of spacecraft (or similar) development: design, build, and test.
- Experience with model-based definition and 3D PDF generation and checking.
- Understanding of spacecraft mission requirements regarding thermal loads, structural margin and resiliency, off-gassing, and more.
- Background in the engineering of Mechanical Ground Support Equipment for the Space or Defense industry.
- TS/SCI clearance desired.
Benefits
- Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- Paid time off (PTO).
- 401K retirement plan.
