Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Directly responsible for the overall mechanical engineering of assigned projects, including planning, project engineering, layouts, and cost control. Directs and reviews design modifications to meet project equipment specifications within cost and schedule guidelines. Ensures total configuration control and traceability of all project hardware, as well as complete maintainability of machine specifications.

Responsibilities

  • For new projects: generate and review project layout drawings, specifications, and scope.
  • Supports Project Management and Sales to assure customer and contract satisfaction while maintaining hardware integrity.
  • Ensures total design traceability of standard equipment as well as specific project-related modifications.
  • Works closely with Project Management, Electrical Engineering, and Process Engineering to coordinate interfaces for hardware compatibility.
  • Specifies, recommends, and approves buy-out items and auxiliary components.
  • Recommends cost savings alternatives through value engineering techniques.
  • Supports Purchasing and Quality Control in determining vendor hardware acceptability.
  • Attends project meetings with customers, engineers, vendors, and manufacturers as necessary.
  • Approves/certifies vendor mechanical submittals and reviews design calculations as needed.
  • Initiates mechanical Bills of Materials through established policies and procedures for release to production.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and corrects potential mechanical problems and communicates corrective actions to appropriate parties.
  • Supports the aftermarket group for machine design retrofit projects and refurbishment: reviews project layout drawings, specifications, and scope; creates retrofit BoM kits; designs items for retrofit, as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of five years of related experience in project engineering and mechanical design.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate technical needs at all levels of personnel and management.
  • Experience with machine/fabrication/welding shop techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of cost estimating procedures and value engineering judgments.
  • Knowledge of engineering Bills of Material structure.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Mechanical and Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience with Inventor/Vault/SAP is preferred.
  • Ability to perform simple structural stress analysis and calculations.
  • Good understanding of drafting standards and weld symbols.

Work Environment

  • Ability to sit for extended periods using a desktop computer.
  • Willingness to put in extra time when needed.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take directions well.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

Relationships

Reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and interfaces with Project Management, Electrical Engineering, Process Engineering, Purchasing, Production, and Start-Up/Service. Demonstrates the ability to identify, evaluate, and correct potential mechanical problems while communicating corrective actions to the appropriate parties.
