Mechanical Engineer 3

About the role

This role applies principles and techniques of mechanical engineering for the design and development of mechanical equipment and sub-systems. Responsibilities include concept development, specification of mechanical loads, component selection, materials of construction, and tolerances. You will create engineering drawings and technical documents, resolve technical conflicts, and verify equipment performance against design specifications. Assignments range from small scope designs to multi-plant, site projects, with higher levels potentially managing other Engineers and/or technicians.

You will also generate hazardous waste, label containers, meet storage requirements, and transport them to less than 90-day storage.

Schedule

1st Shift: 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Thursday and 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM Friday. Work hours are subject to change based on business needs.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research, develop, and design mechanical components, equipment, facilities, and systems for manufacturing processes using engineering principles and practices.
• Specify mechanical loads, materials of construction, component selection, machine layout, clearances, and tolerances.
• Perform value analysis engineering and develop improvements to reduce downtime.
• Ensure equipment and system designs are verified against specifications.
• Review designs and project plans.
• Analyze mechanical system design and operation; develop preventive maintenance programs.
• Write maintenance procedures for mechanical systems/equipment to ensure maximum service life and utilization.
• Guide project activities to ensure conformance to functional and technical specifications.
• Ensure mechanical equipment and systems comply with OSHA standards, government regulations, and company specifications.
• Support validation of new and revised processes.
• Adhere to project schedules and budgets.
• Handle complex and novel assignments, including developing new or improved techniques and procedures.
• Support continuous improvement of plant processes and equipment, including FGMS activities, uptime improvement, yield improvement, and maintenance expense reduction.
• Participate in and lead troubleshooting and problem-solving activities; perform root cause analysis and develop permanent countermeasures.
• Advise and support maintenance technicians in executing maintenance activities.
• Assign tasks, coach, mentor, and review technicians and Engineers.
• Lead cross-functional teams for improvement projects and conduct on-the-job training for other Engineers as needed.
• Effectively collaborate with others to achieve team goals.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field OR Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, ranging from a minimum of one year in a production operations environment (or equivalent Co-op/Intern experience) to a minimum of 10 years’ experience, depending on the level.
• Working knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, statics and dynamics, heat transfer, materials science, and mechanical design.
• Proficiency with CAD.
• Demonstrated computer skills, preferably in Microsoft Office.

Skills

• Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement experience (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or similar methodologies).
• Strong project management skills, including managing multiple projects, contractors, and capital equipment installations.
• Excellent problem-solving and root cause analysis skills, including experience with methodologies such as 5 Whys, Fishbone, and FEMA.
• Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers and maintenance technicians while leading cross-functional teams.
• Experience with injection molding processes and equipment.
• Experience in equipment design and application for a manufacturing environment.
• Experience with equipment sustainability and retrofit.
