Responsibilities
- Performs all duties of a Helper-Mechanical.
- Disassembles, reassembles, overhauls, repairs, tests, adjusts, replaces, and cleans mechanical equipment in a generating station, including generators, compressors, fans, pumps, valves, and combustion turbines.
- Installs and aligns pumps, fans, and auxiliary equipment (excluding major generating equipment).
- Performs layout for foundations, trenching, fencing, and shapes based on sketches, drawings, or specifications.
- Machines parts requiring skill, such as dressing and threading bolts, truing-up seats and discs, and making simple valve stems; assists in major machine work.
- Performs standard tube/pipe end preps, layout, and set-up for minor machining activities (e.g., repair of shafts, valve stems, seats, and discs, excluding Q and ASME standards).
- Conducts machining for weld coupons and chamfering of pipe to scale dimensions.
- Drills and taps parts and equipment.
- Operates fabrication shop equipment, including shears, punch presses, and Tri-tool equipment for pipe end prepping (less than 10" diameter).
- Performs carpentry, concrete, and excavating work.
- Operates construction equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, tractor-trailers, and auxiliary equipment.
- Operates hydraulic cranes (up to but not including 80-ton capacity), gantry cranes (excluding Refuel floor and Turbine deck), aerial devices (e.g., bucket or platform trucks, hydraulic telescoping manlifts up to 175' height), and permanently mounted hoists.
- Performs structural welding (Mechanic welding at F-06 rate of pay).
- Performs rigging tasks, including moving, placing, hanging, or erecting structures, transformers, circuit breakers, switching devices, and machinery.
- Directs layout, fabrication, and installation of thermal insulation and penetration seals.
- Installs and maintains conduit and pipe systems for air, water, steam, oil, electric, and gas lines as defined in sketches, drawings, or specifications.
- Works from hanging scaffolds, spiders, or similar support devices at any height.
- Uses computer-based systems relevant to the work.
- Holds clearance orders for the performance of the above-mentioned work.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or necessary.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- Successfully pass the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Power Plant Maintenance Positions Selections System (MASS).
- Satisfactory performance and experience in a lower classification, including completion of appropriate Helper-Mechanical’s assigned units of instruction, or equivalent practical experience and training.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Ability to obtain unescorted site access.
- Ability to interpret sketches, diagrams, and specifications.
- Ability to direct other employees.
- Working knowledge of tools and materials used in mechanical and structural work.
- Physical strength and endurance to perform the duties listed.
- Ability to adhere to applicable work standards.
- Ability to obtain an Asbestos Worker license.
