MECHANIC III
About the role
The Fleet Management Department seeks a Mechanic III who demonstrates exceptional technical skills and ethical behavior. This position offers opportunities to contribute to the department's mission and vision.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance activities on light duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
- Respond to complex reports on operational/condition issues with vehicles and equipment.
- Perform system testing and diagnostics to determine cause and course of repair action.
- Make repairs and replace failed vehicle and equipment components of all complexity levels.
- Become familiar with and rebuild complex vehicle and equipment components as needed.
- Perform complex vehicle body and paint repairs as well as component upfit and make-ready.
- Serve as shop supervisor in absence of shop manager.
- Train lower-level mechanics.
- Order parts and update/complete work orders according to department standard operating procedures.
- Use tools and equipment such as electronic computer scanners and laptops to diagnose mechanical equipment, tire changers, alignment, vehicle lifts, welding machines, cutting torque, bench grinders, pressure washers, overhead cranes, hoists, floor jacks, and a variety of hand and power tools.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Perform housekeeping duties. Observe environmental and hazardous material procedures.
- Work safely and follow all safety procedures. Stay current on new technology. Must furnish own hand tools.
Requirements
- High school degree, GED or equivalent.
- Four-year equivalent of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required.
- An Associate’s degree (at least 18-month program) in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology plus, two-year equivalent of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience.
- A valid Texas Class C driver’s license upon hire.
- To be eligible for a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), it must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
- To be eligible for certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector, it must be achieved within 6 months of employment.
- May be required to achieve Emergency Vehicle Technician certification.
- May require mobile air (EPA 609) certification.
- Prior automotive supervisory and/or training experience is strongly desired.
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
Qualifications
- Possess a Master ASE technician certification and/or Lean Six Sigma preference.
- Applicants with mechanical aptitude are highly desired.
Skills
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Must pass an assignment drug test if hired for a promotional position.

This is a Fleet Management Department Position at the Tier I Level. The selection process will involve application review and/or interview. The hiring department may administer a skill assessment.
