Mechanic II - Equipment and Fleet Management (Civil Service)

About the Role

The Mechanic II performs a wide variety of journeyman-level mechanical repairs and maintenance services on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment to maintain operational readiness.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive and periodic maintenance, inspections, and repairs to fuel, ignition, electrical, braking, and other systems in automotive equipment and power tools to ensure safe and operational condition; monitors recycling and environmental standards.
• Repairs and maintains hydraulic equipment using hand and special tools or certifiable welds to provide functional equipment at all times.
• Pulls, labels, cleans, and places into inventory parts from damaged vehicles to be used in repairing other damaged vehicles; replaces tires, suspension, and other parts and equipment.
• Performs state-mandated inspections to ensure appropriate work is completed; researches parts and equipment to determine the necessary course of action for repair and maintenance work.
• Assists in emergency towing situations and various accident occurrences; tows vehicles and equipment for repair and maintenance.
• Completes job tickets, work orders, and keeps records of work performed, time required, repairs, parts, and preventive maintenance to document work and conditions of equipment.
• Drives a wrecker to work sites or field locations to repair or retrieve city vehicles or equipment.
• Communicates with employees, divisions, other city departments, and vendors to coordinate the repair of equipment and obtain materials.
• Trains and educates other Mechanic Is and Assistant Mechanics on procedures and methods for repairs; ensures all work is done accurately and effectively with strong attention to detail.
• Performs any and all other work as assigned.
• Available to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

• Three (3) years of experience in mechanical automotive/truck repair.
• An associate's degree or certificate in automotive technology plus one (1) year of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
• Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Skills

• Knowledge of mechanical principles, methods, procedures, and tool use.
• Knowledge of hand, pneumatic, and electric tools used in automotive repair.
• Ability to diagnose and plan the repair of a wide variety of automotive and diesel mechanical problems.
• Ability to read and understand automotive and mechanical repair manuals.
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
• Ability to lead and train other mechanics.
• Ability to complete apprenticeship training for the maintenance and repair of equipment.
• Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $49,254.40 - $55,348.80. The amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
