About the Role

Maintains and repairs a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment, including university vehicles, golf carts, diesel-powered equipment, and trailers. Responsible for diagnosing issues, performing complex repairs, and supporting campus roadside assistance. This position is classified as essential personnel and may be required to respond during storms, hurricanes, or emergencies. Provides daily supervision and scheduling for Mechanic I personnel to ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and performs routine service, complex repairs, and maintenance on university vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoes, forklifts, electric carts, and trailers.
  • Ensures all vehicles are mechanically sound and clean in appearance.
  • Maintains a clean and organized mechanics shop.
  • Uses computer diagnostic tools and technical expertise to identify and resolve vehicle issues, including problems with engines, electrical systems, and vehicle performance.
  • Rebuilds vehicle systems and fabricates or modifies parts as needed using welding, grinders, cutting torches, or plasma cutters.
  • Services and rebuilds small engines for needed equipment and performs maintenance and repair on vehicle air conditioning systems.
  • Performs advanced repair and maintenance on diesel engines, heavy equipment, and tractors, including engine replacement or major overhauls.
  • Supervises and assigns daily duties to Mechanic I staff, ensuring task completion and quality control.
  • Purchases parts, tools, and supplies as needed to maintain shop operations and project timelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one (1) year or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Commercial Class D Driver's License.

Skills

  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, traffic rules and regulations, and maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.
  • Skill in the use of mechanical tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Skill in determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Skill in performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Skill in troubleshooting engines and making needed repairs.
  • Skill in managing one’s own time and the time of others.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

Pay

Salary Range: $18.00 - $18.00 per hour
