About the Role

This position performs maintenance and repair of County-owned vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs vehicle inspections; inspects and tests vehicle systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC, emissions, and other systems.
  • Completes or revises work orders for repairs; obtains required parts; performs emission tests per state law frequency and criteria.
  • Inspects and tests completed work; updates required records.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles, including checking and replacing fluids, oil changes, Freon recovery, filter replacements, lubrication, blade installation, tire rotation/mounting/balancing, belt/hose replacements, battery checks, greasing equipment, radiator flushing, and tune-ups.
  • Performs repairs on vehicles; troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and other defects using operator reports, fault codes, and diagnostic data.
  • Fabricates parts as needed; completes required repairs; verifies parts operate according to specifications.
  • Makes minor repairs in the field to allow vehicles to return to the shop; performs minor body repairs.
  • Determines materials required for projects; gathers equipment, parts, and supplies; assists in monitoring inventory levels; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
  • Overhauls, repairs, and maintains engines, motors, motor-powered equipment, and construction/special purpose equipment powered by internal combustion engines.
  • Maintains brake systems, transmissions, ignition systems, rear ends, differential assemblies, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electronic systems, wheels, and alignment.
  • Repairs steering equipment; relines and adjusts brakes and clutches.
  • Maintains records and inventories of parts, components, supplies, and materials; processes documentation associated with department operations.
  • Operates machinery, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments; performs general cleaning and maintenance of equipment and work areas.
  • Communicates with supervisors, County employees, and others to coordinate work activities, review status, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of related experience in automotive maintenance and repair, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate’s Degree in Automotive Repair or related field preferred.
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • May be required to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Skills

  • Knowledge of local government operations, automotive repair programs, policies, and modern office practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar programs.
  • Skill in using computers and software applications related to job functions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact courteously with employees and the public.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to process payments and manage accounts within budget.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and accounting.
  • Ability to operate a copying machine.

Physical Demands

The work is heavy, requiring exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Requires mental acuity, including rational decision-making, logical reasoning, and verbal expression. Close visual acuity is necessary.

Work Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. May require standing for extended periods and exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, heights, confined spaces, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, or rude/irate customers.
