About the role

The Gearbox Mechanic performs labor activities in the disassembly, evaluation, assembly, testing and shipping process of power transmission systems, machinery, piping and pump systems at the Smith Services service center in Princeton, WV. This is a dayshift position.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Customer Service, Purchasing, Quality and Engineering to ensure assembly/test problems are addressed and quickly resolved.
  • Provide feedback to Engineering on assembly/test discrepancies, drawing errors, quality errors, etc. to preclude reoccurrence.
  • Perform assembly, testing, disassembly, inspection and painting of electric motors and enclosed drive gearboxes following customer specifications.
  • Ensure the quality of all work sent to the test panel.
  • Complete all related paperwork accurately and thoroughly.
  • Utilize drawings, sketches, geometric dimensioning, tolerances, and repair manuals.
  • Work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet production demands.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years of mechanical experience.
  • 3-5 years of welding experience.
  • Proficiency in multiple craft skills needed to repair and manufacture mechanical and rotating equipment, including: pipefitting, welding and burning, machining, rigging, power transmission systems, pumps, shaft alignments, fluid power and machinery design.
  • Proficient use of calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators to measure tolerances as tight as .0005.
  • Proficiency in the care and handling, installation, adjustment, lubrication and maintenance of anti-friction bearings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees.
