Mechanic (DPS) (Promotional and Open Competitive)

Examination date: week of September 14, 2026. Certified candidates will receive exam details by email at a later date.

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain buses, cars, vans, and other district vehicles to ensure uninterrupted educational operations.
• Diagnose simple and complex automotive problems, including electrical and fuel systems.
• Rebuild engines and braking systems; inspect and replace drive train components.
• Perform regular preventative maintenance according to schedules.
• Respond to emergency breakdowns and conduct safety inspections.
• Follow supervisor instructions and keep detailed records of all work performed.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Perform other related tasks as needed.

Requirements

• Three years of experience in vehicle maintenance, including thorough knowledge of diesel and gas engine management systems, anti-lock brakes, emission control systems, and engine diagnostic equipment.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
• Must obtain an Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school passenger endorsements within 6 months of appointment.
• Must provide own hand tools if hired.
• Must pass an Ohio Department of Education T8 physical, lift a minimum of 75 pounds, and be physically able to climb, stand, lift, and bend for extended periods.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have legal right to work in the United States at time of application.
• Must pass a Federal and State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check.

Qualifications

• Military Credit: Open competitive applicants with military service receive an additional 20% credit if a passing grade is attained. A non-returnable copy of the DD214 or Certificate of Service (indicating honorable discharge) must be submitted with the application or presented at the examination.
• Promotional Credit: Current Dayton Public Schools employees receive promotional credit if employment is indicated on the application. Seniority breaks identical scores, followed by random selection.
• Promotional applicants are considered for appointment before open competitive applicants. Identical exam scores for open competitive applicants are broken by (1) military credit and (2) random selection.

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Final appointment is contingent upon passing a job-related medical examination, drug screen, police background investigation, and providing documentary evidence of employment authorization and identity.
