Mechanic

About the role

The Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance on waste pick-up trucks (primarily ASL and rear-load models 2025 and newer) and support equipment, ensuring adherence to safety and customer-service standards. The role involves diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and collaboration with the repair team to meet company goals.

Responsibilities

• Determine vehicle condition through inspections and diagnostic tests; identify worn or damaged parts.
• Perform minor and major repairs on waste pick-up trucks and support equipment.
• Maintain equipment availability by completing preventive maintenance schedules, installing upgrades, controlling corrosion, and winterizing procedures.
• Conduct regular preventive maintenance, including inspections, tire rotation, and oil changes.
• Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies (e.g., power trains, electrical, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics).
• Perform machine shop operations, adjustments, and alignments (e.g., bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms).
• Verify vehicle performance via test drives and system adjustments.
• Comply with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
• Maintain vehicle appearance through cleaning, washing, and painting.
• Document services and repairs in vehicle records.
• Collaborate with the repair team to diagnose problems and plan repairs.
• Maintain shop equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, and performing preventive maintenance.
• Manage costs by utilizing warranties and evaluating service/parts options.
• Keep supplies stocked by inventorying, ordering, and verifying receipt.
• Update job knowledge through educational opportunities and technical publications.
• Follow and comply with all safety policies.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 2+ years’ experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
• Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
• Excellent reading and writing skills.
• ASE Diesel Certification preferred (an asset).
• Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands

• Light to moderate lifting (50–100 pounds).
• Work in a shop/warehouse environment.

Schedule

• Full-time employment (minimum 40-hour work week).
