About the role
The job of Mechanic Assistant was established for the purpose of providing mechanic services with specific responsibility for performing assigned repairs and preventive maintenance; assisting mechanics; and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site. This job reports to Mechanic/Shop Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Adjusts parts, components, systems for the purpose of ensuring the fitness and proper operation of all vehicles.
- Assists other mechanics and/or assistant mechanics as needed for the purpose of completing difficult tasks and responding to coworker requests.
- Attends department in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle.
- Fuels assigned vehicles for the purpose of ensuring the vehicle is available for service.
- Inspects assigned vehicles (buses, trucks, tractors, vans and other district vehicles) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
- Maintain all equipment for the purpose of snow removal.
- Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
- Performs minor body work for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
- Performs road tests on all vehicles/school buses for the purpose of ensuring that vehicles are in safe operating order.
- Performs routine vehicle maintenance program for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements.
- Prepares written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements.
- Repairs assigned vehicle system components for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
Requirements
- Adhering to safety practices; operating school buses and/or district vehicles; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles; keyboarding and basic computer use; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Safety practices and procedures; and pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.
- Adequate strength and stamina to perform the essential functions of the job; ability to lift, push, pull, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; ability to operate various types of equipment; ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English; ability to adapt to changing work priorities; ability to provide information and/or advise others; ability to operate within a defined budget; ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals; ability to work with a variety of data; ability to utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment; ability to work under direct supervision using standardized routines; ability to provide information and/or advise others; and ability to operate within a defined budget.
