Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service. Assists the Department Manager to present the freshest, most innovative, and best quality meat products at a competitive retail price to customers.

Responsibilities

  • Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner throughout the store.
  • Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name when possible.
  • Assists customers by:
    • Escorting them to products.
    • Securing out-of-reach products.
    • Loading or unloading heavy items.
    • Noting and passing along customer suggestions or requests.
    • Performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service, including taking product orders.
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Ensures department standards are met, including product freshness and appearance.
  • Reviews and pulls product by stale date.
  • Rotates and replenishes display case product.
  • Prepares cutting lists for case fills.
  • Offers meal solutions and preparation advice to customers.
  • Handles and resolves customer issues.
  • Conducts cutting tests and orders new items (not just replenishment).
  • Ensures proper temperatures and storage procedures to control shrink and maintain freshness.
  • Trains new employees.
  • Tenderizes, grinds, and cuts merchandise.
  • Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures, maintaining a clean and neat work area.
  • Adheres to company policies, store guidelines, and personal hygiene/dress standards.
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties

  • Assumes management duties in the absence of the Department Manager.
  • Wraps, weighs, and labels product.
  • Performs department cleaning.
  • Provides input on goals and pricing.
  • Assists in other store areas as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Instructs, assigns, reviews, and plans work of others.
  • Maintains standards, coordinates activities, and allocates personnel.

Requirements

  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to file, post, mail materials, copy data, interview for basic information, and guide people.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of Hy-Vee food safety training, Cornell Home Study food safety course, and Dale Carnegie (encouraged).
  • Over one year of related work experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Visual requirements include near and far vision (with or without correction), depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Must perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions

This position is exposed daily to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, cleaning chemicals/solvents, and electrical shock. The work environment is fast-paced.

Equipment Used

  • Power ban saw, grinder, tenderizer, slicer, bone duster (where applicable), knives, tumblers.
  • Automatic patty machine (where applicable), automatic stuffer, wrapping system, rotisserie.
  • Pallet jack, box cutter, computer, and C.A.R.S. reordering system.

Additional Information

  • Responsible for company assets, including equipment and merchandise.
  • Has access to confidential information such as ads, gross profit percentage, wages, sales, pricing, and employee information.
  • Regular contact with customers, governmental or regulatory agencies, vendors, suppliers, and community organizations.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
