Math Lab Assistant (Part-time)

About the role

New River Community College is a two-year state institution of higher education operating under a statewide system of 23 community colleges. Located on a 100+ acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia, the college provides modern, well-equipped facilities for vocational‑technical and college parallel programs serving approximately 5,000 students. Responsibilities

• Manage logistical details and operations for the developmental math lab.
• Offer assistance to math students as they work on coursework outside of class, including remote, evening, and weekend hours.
• Proctor tests and quizzes for developmental math students during non‑class times.
• Communicate with math instructors about any issues with their students.
• Maintain cleanliness of the math lab by tidying up after every class.
• Ensure all computers and the printer are working properly at all times, reporting any problems to the Help Desk.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Requirements

• Ability to tutor mathematics, specifically arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population including students, faculty, staff and the general public in a professional environment.
• Demonstrated ability to use various computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to learn how to effectively use and work with new software, in particular classroom management software such as Canvas.
• Ability to prioritize and work on multiple tasks with minimum supervision.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Work experience in an educational environment.

Pay

Hiring range: $17 per hour.

Schedule

Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, flexible hours totaling 29 hours per week (approximately 1,450 hours per year).
