Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sample and test construction materials such as basement soils, subbases, bases, Portland cement, concrete, hot mix asphalt and other materials as necessary for quality assurance in at laboratory and construction job sites.
  • Performs sampling and testing in accordance with Caltrans Test Methods (CTMs) and ASTM methods.
  • Prepare and submit written field reports including test results and daily reports.
  • Test and work in accordance with Company safety policies.
  • Interact with client representative (supervisors, foremen, project managers, engineers, etc.) at project sites.
  • Perform calculations by test methods.
  • Inspect the operations of asphalt and concrete batch plants; check equipment, weights, temperatures, and materials for compliance with specifications; sample and test aggregates for compliance with contract specifications.
  • Inspect facilities where materials are used and stored to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations and ordinances.
  • May use field air monitoring equipment to test atmosphere or other conditions at construction and maintenance sites; may calibrate and adjust equipment in the field and interpret results.
  • Store, transport and operate portable nuclear gauges in accordance with federal, state and local regulations as well as specified test method(s).
  • May be required to transport hazardous materials.

Skills/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • BS in Civil Engineering or related field preferred.
  • Must have Caltrans Test Methods (CTM) 105.
  • Current CTM certifications for CTMS: 125, 202, 216, 217, 226, 231, 342, 375, 379, 504, 518, 521, 533, 539, 540, 541, 543, 547, 556, & 557, or ASTM equivalents preferred.
  • Current nuclear gauge safety certification, ACI Field Level I, and experience working as a materials tester for Caltrans preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to perform mathematical calculations required for test method.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Walking up to 2 hours per day while performing field visits.
  • Able to see well enough to function in a typical office environment and read standard text on paper and electronic screen of a computer or handheld device.
  • The associate frequently is required to use hands.
  • Frequent repetitive reaching, repetitive hand use.
  • Physical agility to perform tasks requiring a full range of body movements including lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, balancing, squatting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, or assuming crouched positions.
  • Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequently use safety equipment such as a hard hat and safety vest; work in areas not well ventilated such as utility vaults; work outdoors or work on uneven ground or floor spaces; work at elevations above ground level and on marine vessels/structures.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions and can work any day of the week both night and day.
  • Available for after hour emergency response.
