About the role

The Department of Transportation is seeking a Materials Technician 1 to join a team responsible for testing and evaluating materials used in transportation projects. This role supports the maintenance and safety of public roads through quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Sample Preparation: Prepare material samples according to established testing procedures
  • Test Execution: Perform laboratory tests following American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Standards, American Society for Testing and Materials International, and the Pennsylvania Test Methods
  • Result Documentation: Record test findings with careful attention to accuracy and detail
  • Equipment Calibration: Verify that testing instruments are properly calibrated before use
  • Lab Cleanliness: Maintain clean workspaces and equipment to support a safe laboratory environment

Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: One year of experience as a Technical Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or one year of experience in the testing of materials used in highway, bridge, building, hydraulic or similar construction projects and graduation from high school; or an Associate's Degree in a civil engineering technology or closely related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Other Requirements: Must meet the PA residency requirement.

Work Schedule and Additional Information

  • Work Schedule: Full-time employment
  • Work Hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Telework: Not available in this position
