Material Handling Technician

About the role

The Saw Operator is responsible for setting up and operating the saw machine to cut various patterns in steel stock. This role involves a range of tasks from material preparation to quality control.

Responsibilities

• Sets up the machine to perform the job by selecting blade and inserting appropriate blade according to specifications and using hand tools.
• Locates materials in racks according to saw list and loads materials onto the saw using a forklift when necessary.
• Guides, stops, holds workpieces in place using hand tools and measuring devices.
• Scribes reference lines on workpieces based on blueprints, templates, sample parts, or specifications.
• Turns controls to set cutting speed, feed rate, and table angle for specified operations.
• Adjusts blade tension, height, and angle to perform the required cut.
• Turns valves to start coolant and air flow during cutting.
• Reads work orders for specifications, such as materials to be used, location of cutting lines, and dimensions and tolerances.
• Replaces defective blades using appropriate hand tools.
• Measures completed workpieces for conformance to specifications using measuring devices.
• Places workpieces on the cutting table and clamps them into position.
• Sharpens dulled blades using bench grinder, abrasive wheel, or lathe.
• Examines completed workpieces for defects and sorts them accordingly.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years shop experience.
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Knowledge of mathematics.
• The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, and carry objects.
• The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with the body, arms, and/or legs.
• The ability to use hands and arms in handling, installing, forming, positioning, and moving materials or in manipulating things such as hand tools and hoist.

• Works safely and maintains a safe work record.
• Ensures safety is the top priority due to the potential for great bodily harm from the machinery.

Skills

• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of blueprints, drawings, and models.
