About the Role

The Master Electrician reviews and evaluates the design philosophy for electrical installations from an operational and assembly perspective, providing experienced feedback to pertinent teams. This role oversees pre-fabrication and integration of critical power enclosures to ensure compliance with exact specifications and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards. The Master Electrician monitors and audits Electrical Assembly teams and Quality Inspection personnel across all facilities and stages, offering guidance on installation means and methods. A successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in industrial power distribution systems, design for manufacturability, and interpersonal skills for team collaboration and mentoring, while also assisting in the electrical apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in ensuring the ongoing integrity of the quality management system (ISO 9001:2015, AISC, NEC, etc.) through internal auditing or as directed.
  • Visit all TAS sites to inspect electrical assembly, including wiring, panels, and equipment.
  • Verify compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local ordinances, and approved specifications.
  • Examine electrical drawings, plans, and specifications before and during assembly.
  • Detect faulty wiring, incorrect materials, or non-compliant assembly and create nonconformances for violations.
  • Assist in receiving inspection of electrical components to meet contractual obligations.
  • Train quality personnel to perform basic electrical inspections.
  • Develop procedures and instructions as needed.
  • Prepare detailed reports, maintain records, and document work performed.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide technical guidance to TAS personnel.
  • Investigate reports of unpermitted or unsafe electrical work.
  • Serve as the NCCER Instructor for the electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Verify workmanship quality and create technical reports for internal use.
  • Apply sound judgment to resolve complex electrical compliance issues.
  • Take initiative to attend training and broaden skills in new electrical technologies.
  • Ensure code compliance and administer the quality control system.
  • Ensure all final inspections are obtained prior to project closeout.
  • Exercise authority to halt work on nonconforming activities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), attention to detail, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the installation of industrial electric wiring, instrumentation, VFDs, MCCs, and controls in a shop fabrication facility.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in controls wiring.
  • Current electrical license registered with the state.
  • Effective working knowledge of industry codes and standards: NEC, IEC, UBC, IBC, ICC, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of industry "best practices" relating to electrical power distribution systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams, and assist in the checking procedure for the same.
  • Intermediate computer skills (ability to work with spreadsheets and develop documentation).
  • Ability to develop processes and procedures for electrical work.
  • Familiarity with testing practices such as Loop Tests, Point to Point Tests, Function Tests, etc.
  • Good command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to travel to active non-TAS construction sites for investigation and remediation activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industrial HVAC, energy service contracting, or central chilled water plant experience.
  • Power generation plant experience.
  • Experience with large industrial power units, chillers, and chiller systems.
  • ISO 9001 training.
  • NEC training.
  • 2+ years as a licensed Master Electrician.

Skills

  • Highly computer literate in all standard business operating software.
  • Ability to analyze complex data with a variety of variables to solve practical problems where only limited standardization exists.
  • High level of ability to influence pertinent departments and collaborate effectively.
  • Provide direct technical support related to quality management processes and philosophies.
  • Ability to produce high-quality results using autonomy.
  • Operate and train others to use common electrical testing equipment (e.g., multimeter, ohmmeter).
  • Operate and train others to use common electrical installation tools (e.g., termination crimping, insulation strippers).
  • High degree of experience in interpreting one-line and electrical assembly drawings with the ability to train others.
  • Experience with analysis of compliance with NEC, IEC, NFPA, and other local and international codes.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced, often changing environment.
  • Ability to multi-task over several projects and manage conflicting priorities while remaining organized.

Qualifications

  • Master Electrician’s License.
  • High School Diploma/GED with some specialized training.

Work Environment

Position requires at least 30% to 40% desk work with a computer. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Involves physical activities such as use of fingers, sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Visual acuity requirements include color, depth perception, and field of vision necessary to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and conduct extensive reading. The incumbent will be subject to inside environmental conditions.
