About the role

The Massage Therapist at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children provides Massage Therapy to patients under the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver through home visits. This role involves identifying, assessing, planning, and implementing appropriate massage care plans to improve muscle tone, circulation, range of motion, and address physical symptoms related to illness. The therapist also provides physical and emotional comfort, pain management, and restores the idea of healthy touch for children/youth undergoing treatments that may involve painful interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Uses evidence-based treatments/modalities to address patient’s needs and preferences.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of illness and potential complications and side effects of treatments.
  • Maintains a caseload and ensures accurate and timely individualized assessment, planning, implementation, and documentation.
  • Develops a plan of care in conjunction with patient and family.
  • Maintains professionalism and legal accountability for all aspects of work.
  • Monitors and reviews the effectiveness of the therapy given and modifies it as necessary to support patient’s treatment plan of care.
  • Discusses patient suitability to receive massage therapy treatment with the referring professional and the Home Care Palliative Care Program Manager, as needed.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary case conferences and acts as a clinical resource for the team when needed.
  • Communicates promptly with the Home Care Palliative Care Program Manager or designee as well as the multidisciplinary team as issues arise for patients, while being mindful of confidentiality issues.
  • Acts as the patient’s advocate in relation to Massage Therapy.
  • Assists with community relations and community educational opportunities (non-essential).

Requirements

  • Formal education required: High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Currently licensed as a Massage Therapist by the State of New York.
  • At least 3 years of working with the medically fragile population.
  • At least 1 year of clinical experience with pediatric population, preferably involving end of life care.

Qualifications

  • Complies with regulatory guidelines and meets agency standards.
  • Obtains appropriate certification.
