About the role
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious, high‑energy editor to oversee coverage of financial markets, a core area of the newsroom that intersects with the biggest economic and business storylines. You will guide a team of expert journalists as they chronicle how Americans—from Wall Street professionals to everyday traders—invest trillions of dollars in stocks, bonds, crypto, and other assets. This includes uncovering and explaining the reasons behind market swings, identifying hot and cold trades, and spotlighting the people at the center of the action. The role demands shepherding daily news at a fast pace, ensuring major developments are reported with analytical depth and context, while also developing a pipeline of high‑impact feature stories and experimenting with visual storytelling, video, audio, and emerging platforms. The position is based in New York and reports to Financial Editor Amol Sharma.
Responsibilities
- Drive the Journal’s coverage of markets news, managing a team of reporters at a high level.
- Develop ambitious feature story ideas with reporters and collaborate with newsroom stakeholders to orchestrate their publication.
- Line‑edit stories with the help of a deputy editor.
- Work with reporters to cultivate sources across the investing world, including traders and fund managers.
- Guide reporters to contribute incisive posts for WSJ Live Markets, the platform for real‑time markets coverage and analysis.
- Collaborate with product and tech teams to develop products that expand WSJ markets coverage to a wider audience.
- Brainstorm and sharpen story ideas, coach reporters on sourcing, and experiment with visual storytelling, video, audio, and emerging platforms.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of experience in business journalism with a strong command of financial‑market dynamics.
- Experience as a story editor, or strong writing skills if you haven’t edited before.
- A desire to cultivate talent and help reporters achieve their potential.
- The ability to analyze data quickly and tell complicated stories in creative ways.
- An entrepreneurial, collegial spirit.
Pay
Base Pay Range: $180,000 – $220,000. Compensation is competitive and flexible, reflecting experience, skills, location, and other relevant factors. Bonus targets for eligible roles are determined based on market benchmarks and individual contributions.
