About the role

The Market Design Engineer position at Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is a critical role within the Markets+ program. This role involves understanding and evaluating market design, testing market functionality, and providing technical expertise to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze Markets+ design and evaluate impacts of proposed changes
  • Test and validate market functionality and system performance
  • Develop market metrics, reports, and ad hoc analyses
  • Support market software development, testing, and implementation
  • Apply market rules to business operations
  • Provide technical expertise to stakeholders and committees
  • Support FERC filings with data and documentation
  • Research other market designs and industry practices
  • Document analyses and develop educational materials
  • Respond to customer issues and identify market improvements

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or a graduate degree from a college with ABET accreditation
  • Calculus-based engineering field, preferred degrees include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • Engineer I: No experience necessary
  • Engineer II: 2 years of experience
  • Proficient at organizing and conducting technical and analytical studies
  • Knowledge of electric market concepts and ability to apply understanding in unique analysis
  • Ability to support diverse team members and manage parts of complex analysis projects
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and team-building skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Cumbersome working skills with communication and data handling software such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Access
  • Demonstrate proficiency in business acumen and professional conduct
  • Demonstrate the ability to function with constantly changing and multiple priorities
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills
  • Understand and comply with SPP Policies and Procedures
  • Preferred experience in electric utility operations, RTO operations, or energy trading
  • Experience with data manipulation and analysis of large data sets

Pay

  • Engineer I: $80,000 - $87,000
  • Engineer II: $90,000 - $99,000

Schedule

This is a full-time position with days and hours of the workweek being Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working extended hours may be required.

Travel

This position requires moderate travel (approximately 10-15%).
