About the role
The Market Design Engineer position at Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is a critical role within the Markets+ program. This role involves understanding and evaluating market design, testing market functionality, and providing technical expertise to stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Analyze Markets+ design and evaluate impacts of proposed changes
- Test and validate market functionality and system performance
- Develop market metrics, reports, and ad hoc analyses
- Support market software development, testing, and implementation
- Apply market rules to business operations
- Provide technical expertise to stakeholders and committees
- Support FERC filings with data and documentation
- Research other market designs and industry practices
- Document analyses and develop educational materials
- Respond to customer issues and identify market improvements
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or a graduate degree from a college with ABET accreditation
- Calculus-based engineering field, preferred degrees include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
- Engineer I: No experience necessary
- Engineer II: 2 years of experience
- Proficient at organizing and conducting technical and analytical studies
- Knowledge of electric market concepts and ability to apply understanding in unique analysis
- Ability to support diverse team members and manage parts of complex analysis projects
- Strong facilitation skills
- Strong interpersonal and team-building skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Cumbersome working skills with communication and data handling software such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Access
- Demonstrate proficiency in business acumen and professional conduct
- Demonstrate the ability to function with constantly changing and multiple priorities
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills
- Understand and comply with SPP Policies and Procedures
- Preferred experience in electric utility operations, RTO operations, or energy trading
- Experience with data manipulation and analysis of large data sets

Pay
- Engineer I: $80,000 - $87,000
- Engineer II: $90,000 - $99,000
Schedule
This is a full-time position with days and hours of the workweek being Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working extended hours may be required.
Travel
This position requires moderate travel (approximately 10-15%).
