Market Chief Medical Officer-Oregon
About the role
As our Market CMO, you will provide leadership and direction to medical staff in the assigned CommonSpirit (CSH) medical center or hospital to drive CSH’s commitment to high quality, safe and cost-effective healthcare consistent with organizational objectives and to best meet the needs of the community. You will serve as a liaison between physicians, physician/hospital management and community organizations, and work closely with VMFH counterparts on medical affairs strategic planning, provider engagement and organization-wide initiatives. You will report to the Region CMO Northwest and oversee work that includes direct oversight and involvement in activities designed to improve clinical performance, patient safety and operational efficiencies. You will achieve timely conversion to evidence-based medicine, ensure compliance with corporate policies/bylaws and regulatory/accreditation requirements, and directly oversee the hospital-based medical directors.
Responsibilities
- Foster and contribute to a collegial, mutually beneficial relationship between medical staff and hospital administration
- Participate in, through subordinate directors/managers, the programs, systems, operations and resources of the assigned facility/clinical area(s) to assure the safe and appropriate delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic patient care
- Ensure achievement of clinical core measurement scores and that all activities are conducted in a timely and cost-effective manner and in compliance with organizational values, professional standards, internal policies/standards/procedures and applicable regulatory requirements
- Provide oversight with respect to all aspects of patient care within the assigned clinical area(s) and ensure the application of consistent practices relating to clinical/administrative operations, customer service, human resources activities and CommonSpirit Oregon standards
- Collaborate with medical staff to develop and implement new clinical systems/programs to enhance existing services and raise the standard of care for the patient population served
- Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of new/revised standards, policies, procedures, protocols and/or general communications in support of assigned clinical area(s) to ensure consistency with the philosophy/values of the organization and compliance with applicable regulatory/accreditation requirements
- Ensure that all clinical and related support activities are fully documented in accordance with the standards and practices of the organization
- Serve as a member of the CSH Oregon Expanded Executive Leadership Team and provide effective strategic vision, leadership and direction in the overall management of the organization
- Collaborate with other leadership team members in the common goal of standardization, integration and enhancement of the continuum of services available within designated clinical area(s)
- Participate in the company-wide evaluation of processes and practices to determine the need for change to accommodate shifting business priorities, conditions and objectives
- Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of systems/initiatives/programs to facilitate performance/quality improvements in keeping with strategic objectives and regulatory requirements
- Conduct ongoing assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the assigned clinical area(s) to better understand/identify future needs and challenges
- Evaluate existing systems/programs/priorities and future potential to make recommendations for growth, expansion, new service and solvency of existing services based on market demographics and volume projections
- Develop and present comprehensive recommendations regarding the viability of specific systems/initiatives
- Oversee the execution of quality process improvement initiatives/projects to ensure timely achievement of business objectives
- Anticipate and recognize the evolving factors that affect current/future needs and participate in the development of strategies/initiatives/programs/projects to support future growth and/or transformational change of clinical area(s)
- Understand and ensure the full optimization of available information technology to achievement of overall business objectives
- Direct the development of formal strategic/tactical plans, to include both short- and long-term business planning, with full accountability for achievement of plan objectives
- Present and gain Leadership Team support for recommendations and participate in project management efforts to develop/implement planning objectives
- Participate in the determination of operating/capital resources needed to accomplish the business objectives of the assigned facility/clinical area(s) and lead activities and resources in a manner that is fiscally responsible and in accordance with CSH policies and standards
- Participate in the development of the annual operating/capital budget, ensuring alignment/optimization of resources towards achievement of financial goals
- Exercise effective cost control by monitoring and directing the adjustment of expenses as necessary to stay within budget
- Direct the preparation of complete and accurate financial, budget, activity and productivity information including variance reports, financial projections and other statistical reports
- Keep appropriate parties appraised of all issues with potential for budgetary/financial impact
- Direct and evaluate the work of subordinate management staff in accordance with the content, spirit and intent of applicable internal/external regulations and standards for human resource management
- Ensure adequate staffing levels for appropriate coverage to meet budgetary and operational objectives and that staff are qualified and properly trained to perform assigned job duties
- Make employment decisions, establish performance standards and evaluate management staff performance
- Counsel/develop management staff and address performance management concerns and technical issues elevated by subordinates as beyond their scope of authority
- Work collaboratively with CSH Marketing/Communications Dept. to develop effective marketing strategies and promotional materials for the clinical area(s) that are designed to enhance awareness, expand market share and increase revenues to CSH
- Identify and implement strategies/opportunities to differentiate CSH programs and services from those of other healthcare providers
- Participate in community awareness activities to promote clinical programs/services
- Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with primary customers of the clinical area(s) including medical directors, physicians, physician groups, patients, supply vendors and external entities to foster opportunities for revenue enhancement, enhanced customer service and to positively impact core clinical measures
- Support St. Anthony Pendleton for Medical Affairs, Credentialing, Case Review, utilization and other duties requested by Region CMO
Requirements
- Licensed Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy
- Five years of leadership experience as a CMO or ACMO or quality officer or medical director equivalent, and in medical staff and quality improvement activities
- Knowledge of performance improvement methodologies such as VMPS, lean or Sigma, including experience in measuring, assessing and improving the performance of services and processes in a medical center
Preferred Qualifications
- One to three years of physician group experience
- Involvement in healthcare service delivery research and/or decision analysis
Pay
$126.87 – $177.62 per hour
