About the role
Mission Technologies’ Global Security (GS) group comprises live, virtual, constructive (LVC) solutions; fleet sustainment; nuclear and environmental; and Australia business. As a trusted partner to our military customers, HII designs, develops and operates the largest LVC enterprise that prepares warfighters for cross-domain battle. With advanced technologies to enable mission readiness, HII understands that preparation requires full coordination—not readiness in piece-parts.
Responsibilities
- Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.
- Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
- Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
- Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify structural and ventilation elements and equipment.
- Lay out and mark points and lines on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.
- Cut, fit, assemble, and position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
- Apply comprehensive understanding of appropriate welding processes (SMAW Steel and GTAW Aluminum) and production to join, surface, fabricate, and repair parts of metal, sheet metal, and other weld-able materials toward completion of assignments.
- Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
- Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
- Provide guidance and work leadership to less-experienced tradespersons.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
- Participate in special projects as required.
Requirements
- Must have High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
- Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.
- Must have welding experience with stick welding (SMAW) process in all positions from 2G to 6G for Carbon and Stainless Steel.
- Must have Aluminum sheet metal and steel structural welding experience with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) processes in all positions from 2G to 6G.
- Must have working knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction for products to be fabricated and/or installed.
- Must be able to accurately read and follow welding symbols.
- Must be able to accurately read measuring devices to 1/16 of an inch.
- Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures.
- Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII and host facilities.
- Must have experience working in a team environment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
- Must be able to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
- Must be able to travel between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasking.
- Must provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.

- Ability to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through X-ray qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.

Pay
Anticipated Salary Range: $44,808.00 - $55,000.00
