About the role
The Deputy Director of Public Works provides high-level administrative and professional support to the Public Works Director in planning, organizing, directing, and managing the operations and activities of the Public Works Department. This position assists in overseeing the engineering, streets, traffic, fleet, facilities, and solid waste divisions.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Public Works Director in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department, including engineering, streets, traffic, fleet, facilities, and solid waste divisions.
- Coordinates and directs the work of division managers and staff; ensures compliance with city policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Develops and administers the department's annual budget; monitors expenditures and revenues; prepares reports and forecasts.
- Represents the Public Works Director at meetings, conferences, and public events; serves as a liaison with other city departments, government agencies, and the public.
- Prepares and presents reports, correspondence, and recommendations to the City Manager, City Council, and other stakeholders.
- Ensures the department's compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards.
- Oversees the development and implementation of capital improvement projects; coordinates with consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Manages the department's response to emergencies and natural disasters; coordinates with other city departments and agencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in public works, engineering, or a related field, including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
- Valid Arizona driver's license.
- Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Arizona or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
