About the role
A farmer-led watchdog organization exposing corporate power in food and agriculture is hiring a Managing Editor to lead editorial workflow and ensure public-facing materials are clear, accurate, timely, and grounded in the organization's voice.
Responsibilities
- Serving as lead editor across all public-facing communications, including blogs, newsletters, press releases, reports, action alerts, social media copy, website content, op-eds, and Substack drafts
- Ensuring materials are clear, accurate, plainspoken, and consistent with the organization's farmer-led voice
- Owning the editorial calendar and publishing workflow, including Trello processes, review steps, deadlines, approvals, and publication readiness
- Drafting, editing, or overseeing materials that translate policy analysis and campaign priorities into accessible public content
- Developing talking points, FAQs, issue explainers, newsletter copy, media prep materials, and campaign messaging
- Supervising two communications staff members, managing day-to-day workload, deadlines, draft quality, and professional development
- Coinciding with contractors, designers, and vendors to keep deliverables on track
- Supporting media outreach by ensuring press materials, interview prep, and rapid response drafts are accurate and publication-ready
- Maintaining and improving editorial systems, quality assurance checklists, approval processes, style guidance, and publication protocols
- Identifying bottlenecks, recurring errors, or process gaps and recommending improvements
Requirements
- At least seven years of relevant experience in editorial, journalism, nonprofit communications, advocacy communications, policy communications, food and agriculture, or public-interest communications
- At least two years supervising staff, managing contributors, or leading cross-functional editorial work
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills across newsletters, press releases, blogs, reports, op-eds, social media, and web content
- Strong editorial judgment with ability to improve structure, clarity, accuracy, and voice
- Experience managing editorial workflows, publication calendars, or communications production
- Familiarity with media relations, interview prep, talking points, and rapid response
- Strong attention to detail around factual accuracy, links, formatting, and final QA
- Commitment to the organization's mission and farmer-led perspective
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in journalism, communications, or related field (optional)
