About the Role
This position oversees training and compliance for transit operators, maintenance personnel, and supervisory staff, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and promoting a strong safety culture.
Responsibilities
- Training & Development
- Design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive training programs for transit operators, maintenance personnel, and supervisory staff.
- Ensure all training meets regulatory requirements (e.g., FTA, DOT, state agencies) and organizational standards.
- Oversee onboarding, certification, and recertification programs.
- Lead monthly in-service meetings and safety committee meetings.
- Monitor training effectiveness through assessments, audits, and performance metrics.
- Lead initiatives to enhance workforce capability, safety awareness, and service quality.
- Provide backup student operator classroom instruction as required.
- Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local transit regulations and safety standards.
- Interpret and communicate regulatory changes and implement required updates.
- Manage compliance programs, including audits, inspections, and reporting processes.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and external auditors.
- Maintain accurate records of training, certifications, and compliance documentation.
- Safety & Risk Management
- Promote a strong safety culture across the organization.
- Partner with the Transportation and Maintenance Departments to identify risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Analyze incidents, accidents, and performance data to identify trends and drive improvements.
- Support corrective action plans and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage a high-quality Drive Cam Program focused on continuous safety improvement, coaching, and risk mitigation.
- Promote safety events, weekly campaigns, location postings, and annual safe operator awards.
- Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of training and compliance professionals.
- Establish performance expectations and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
- Collaborate with operations, HR, and safety teams to align training with operational goals.
- Manage budgets, vendor relationships, and external training providers.
- Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to training effectiveness and compliance.
- Prepare reports and presentations for senior leadership and regulatory agencies.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and implement best practices in training and compliance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
- Certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer.
- MA CDL Class “B” Commercial Driver License with Passenger and Airbrakes endorsements.
- At least 3 years’ progressive transit experience with commercial class “B” vehicles in a fixed route transit system.
- Knowledgeable with DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards, and ADA requirements.
- Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures; conducting investigations, analyzing data, and identifying and recommending corrective action.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive material.
- Experience conducting oral presentations and relaying technical information in understandable terms.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
Skills
- Working knowledge of adult education principles and practices.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to express ideas logically and comprehensively.
- Good organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
- Ability to interpret and explain regulations to others.
- Temperament necessary for maintaining amiable relations with various levels of company personnel.
Pay
Salary Range: $65,000 - $69,999
