About the role

HRI is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building a healthier future for New York State and beyond through its partnership with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). We support public health research and help translate scientific discoveries into real-world products and technologies by protecting, managing, licensing, and commercializing intellectual property developed through NYSDOH research.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with researchers, institutional leadership, industry partners, and outside counsel to evaluate inventions, manage intellectual property portfolios, negotiate research and licensing agreements, support commercialization initiatives, and cultivate strategic partnerships.
  • Provide guidance on federal regulations, sponsor requirements, technology transfer best practices, and research agreements to promote compliance and mitigate organizational risk.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in law, life sciences, engineering, business, public administration or a related field and six years of experience in technology transfer, research administration, sponsored programs, industry-sponsored research, research contracting, and/or related research partnership activities; OR an Associate's degree in a related field and eight years of such experience; or ten years of such experience.
  • A Master's degree in a related field may substitute one year of such experience. A doctorate in a related field may substitute for three years of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or other advanced degree in law, science, engineering, business, public health, or a related field.
  • Experience negotiating sponsored research agreements, material transfer agreements, data use agreements, confidentiality agreements, license agreements, and other research-related contracts.
  • Experience administering federally funded research programs and interpreting sponsor terms and conditions, including NIH, CDC, NSF, and other federal agencies.
  • Familiarity with the Bayh-Dole Act and federal technology transfer requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Experience managing intellectual property portfolios and supporting patent prosecution activities in collaboration with outside counsel.
  • Experience interpreting and negotiating license agreements, including provisions related to intellectual property ownership, royalty structures, milestones, sublicensing, publication rights, and commercialization obligations.
  • Knowledge of licensing strategies, technology commercialization, startup formation, and entrepreneurial approaches to bringing research innovations to market.
  • Understanding of regulatory pathways and commercialization challenges for biomedical products, diagnostics, medical devices, software, and other health-related technologies.
  • Experience working with inventors, researchers, industry partners, venture-backed companies, or economic development organizations to advance technology commercialization.

Pay

Salary range $124,330-$164,230. Salary commensurate with experience.

Schedule

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with a combination of onsite and remote work.
