About the role

As part of an exciting, fast-paced environment developing authentication and security solutions in the e-commerce space, this position will provide technical expertise within the development lifecycle for new products and services. The role manages Software Engineering teams that partner with product owners, architecture, development, and operations teams to continue evolving the Mastercard Authentication platform. The role is accountable for people leadership, resourcing, delivery planning, project schedules, and vendor relationships.

  • Lead major authentication initiatives by setting technical direction, guiding architecture decisions, and ensuring engineering teams deliver secure, scalable solutions.
  • Partner with product, architecture, and engineering leaders to shape authentication strategy, roadmaps, and solution architectures for new and existing business opportunities.
  • Mentor engineers and engineering leads by providing technical guidance, coaching, and feedback that strengthen team capability and delivery outcomes.
  • Lead and manage agile software development teams that deliver authentication platform capabilities.
  • Manage and direct teams of approximately 10 to 12 software developers, systems analysts, and quality engineers. Set expectations and goals, recruit and develop talent, provide coaching, foster career growth, and address performance challenges when needed.
  • Design, develop, and modify software solutions and implementation plans while working closely with business stakeholders.
  • Drive software design decisions that promote scalability, maintainability, security, and long-term platform evolution.
  • Evaluate software development options and provide analysis that informs product development direction.
  • Consult with internal departments to identify customer needs, translate those needs into project objectives, and provide software development support across partner teams.
  • Create and maintain relevant engineering, delivery, architecture, and operational documentation.
  • Lead the adoption of secure engineering practices and support the delivery of resilient authentication solutions.
  • Promote operational excellence by ensuring systems are observable, reliable, supportable, and designed for operational readiness.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in project management by prioritizing work, planning delivery, tracking progress, and communicating risks.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations that guide product development direction.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration, drive enterprise thinking, and help teams navigate complex technical and business challenges.

Requirements

  • Experience with authentication platforms, security solutions, or related technologies.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management.

Skills

The ideal candidate brings a combination of engineering leadership, hands-on technical depth, and experience delivering secure, resilient authentication capabilities.

  • Strong Hands-on Experience in:
    • Java, Spring / Java EE
    • RESTful APIs
    • Databases (Oracle / PostgreSQL)
    • Building microservices architecture, event-driven systems, and cloud-native applications
  • Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, with the ability to:
    • Design efficient, scalable solutions
    • Optimize performance through appropriate data modeling and algorithm selection
    • Evaluate trade-offs in complexity, memory usage, and execution efficiency
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, or PCF; Kubernetes and Docker; CI/CD pipelines; and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Experience establishing quality governance, guiding effective code reviews, and reinforcing engineering best practices across teams.
  • Experience with performance testing and optimization, automated testing frameworks, and troubleshooting complex production systems in partnership with engineering and operations teams.
  • Strong understanding of software design principles and the ability to create scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions.
  • Experience implementing and championing secure coding practices and application security standards.
  • Experience designing systems with strong observability, operational readiness, reliability, and supportability characteristics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical strategy, architecture decisions, delivery risks, and trade-offs to stakeholders across globally distributed teams.
  • Strong understanding of SDLC methodologies, including Agile, Scrum, DevOps, release management, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape technical vision, lead through ambiguity, drive organizational change, and build high-performing engineering teams.

Pay

O'Fallon, Missouri: $140,000 - $231,000 USD

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
