Together, over 6,500 dedicated professionals deliver over 1 billion gallons of propane from 1,800+ distribution points across the United States.

About the role

The Safety Manager serves as the primary safety leader for S&L operations, owning the development and execution of a comprehensive safety strategy aligned with the AmeriGas Safety Management System. This role is responsible for driving continuous improvement across all safety disciplines — from policy and program development to frontline field engagement. The Safety Manager partners closely with S&L operational leadership to proactively identify risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and embed a strong safety culture throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Safety Strategy & Leadership: Develop and own the overall safety strategy for S&L operations, setting direction across the AmeriGas Safety Management System and aligning priorities with operational goals.
  • Operational Partnership: Collaborate closely with S&L operational leaders to proactively identify risk, address hazards, and ensure safe day-to-day operations across all work sites.
  • Safety Auditing & Compliance: Plan and conduct safety audits to assess compliance, identify gaps, and drive corrective actions that produce measurable safety outcomes and regulatory adherence. Working knowledge and support of PSM program at terminal locations.
  • Field Training & Employee Engagement: Maintain a consistent field presence through site visits and hands-on training to reinforce safe behaviors, build employee trust, and support a culture of safety at every level.
  • Program Development & Administration: Design, build, and manage critical safety programs and administrative systems that drive cultural and behavioral change and support continuous improvement across S&L.
  • Safety Communications: Deliver clear, effective safety communications across all levels of the organization to ensure priorities are understood, incidents are shared transparently, and progress is regularly reported.

Requirements

  • Safety Management System (SMS): Working knowledge of SMS structure, requirements, and performance metrics, with the ability to apply and continuously improve the system across S&L operations.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge: Strong understanding of applicable federal (OSHA, FMCSA NFPA), state, and local safety regulations (OSHA, DOT, NFPA) governing propane and energy distribution operations, including documentation and reporting requirements. Working knowledge of Process Safety Management and how it applies to terminal operations.
  • Field Operations & Risk Management: Familiarity with S&L operational workflows, field-specific hazards, and risk assessment methodologies — including root cause analysis, incident investigation, and corrective action processes. Emergency response responsibilities and support as needed.
  • Safety Auditing & Program Administration: Ability to plan and execute safety audits, manage compliance documentation, and administer safety programs using relevant software platforms, LMS tools, and records management systems.
  • Training Design & Adult Learning: Knowledge of adult learning principles, behavior-based safety concepts, and training facilitation techniques to develop and deliver effective programs for diverse frontline and leadership audiences.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Influence: Proficiency in technical writing, presentation, and cross-functional communication — with the ability to translate complex safety requirements into clear, actionable guidance and drive behavioral change without direct authority.
  • Continuous Improvement & Data Analysis: Skill in tracking and interpreting safety performance data, identifying trends, benchmarking against industry standards, and applying continuous improvement methodologies (such as Plan-Do-Check-Act) to drive measurable results.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in safety or a related discipline; field experience may substitute for degree.
  • 5+ years of progressive work experience administering safety and occupational health.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in a management or supervisory position.
  • Certifications: BCSP preferred.
