Manager, Patient Access

About the Role

This is a patient-facing, clinical position responsible for managing and controlling all processes related to Patient Registration and Financial Counseling in Inpatient, Outpatient, and Emergency areas. The role oversees Financial Screening operations and support functions within the Patient Access business unit of Patient Financial Services.

Responsibilities

• Manages daily activities of staff in inpatient and outpatient admitting/registration areas to ensure timely registration, accurate data entry of patient demographic and financial information, and supervision of the cashiering process.
• Ensures established Electronic Eligibility processes are in place, monitored, reviewed, and coverage updates are completed in a timely manner.
• Monitors and tracks staff productivity and quality through routine audits and quality assurance initiatives. Provides guidance, coaching, mentoring, and feedback to ensure successful operations.
• Serves as a team member to facilitate feedback, communication, problem-solving, issue resolution, and timely processing across Patient Financial Services Departments, clinical areas, and external organizations.
• Ensures cooperation among departments to resolve problems and maintains positive working relationships with employees, management, vendors, and government agencies.
• Responsible for ongoing training and communication of policy and procedure changes to staff via regular meetings.
• Identifies and analyzes job designs, work processes, and workflows to implement improvements that enhance effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency.
• Stays current with developments, advancements, and trends in the field through seminars, professional journals, and active participation in professional organizations.
• Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and laws impacting the area, ensuring adherence to accreditation and health plan requirements.
• Develops and monitors annual budgets to ensure the department has necessary funds to meet established goals and objectives.
• Develops, implements, monitors, and revises annual departmental goals and objectives that align with Parkland’s mission.
• Selects, trains, schedules, motivates, supervises, and evaluates employees, including recommendations for disciplinary actions up to termination, to maximize team capabilities.
• Contributes to accounts receivable (A/R) goals and seeks cost-control measures without compromising safety or quality of care.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
• Eight (8) years of medical business office or hospital patient access experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory or managerial role.
• Experience working with a major patient accounting system.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for requirements.

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of healthcare management, including Medicare/Medicaid Guidelines, JCAHO guidelines, and insurance verification procedures.
• Strong diplomacy and communication skills for interacting with all levels of employees, including senior management.
• Proven customer service, organization, and time management skills.
• Initiative, independent problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
• Knowledge of payor guidelines for inpatient notification, precertification, pre-authorization, coordination of benefits, and MSP rules.
• Ability to qualify patients for funding sources and implement strategic management procedures.
