Manager Pastoral Care - Spiritual Care
About the role
This position is responsible for the effective leadership and management of the CHRISTUS St. Vincent Spiritual Care Department in alignment with the Mission and Core Values of the CHRISTUS Health system. The role ensures that Spiritual Care services comply with national best practice standards and meet the highest standards in health care chaplaincy. The manager leads and advocates for the Spiritual Care Department, including recruitment, hiring, mentoring, and supervision of chaplains, budget oversight, spiritual growth opportunities for associates, and management of departmental volunteers.
The manager collaborates with members of the Spiritual Care Department, directors of Spiritual Care in CHRISTUS Health, regional department directors, physicians, hospital leadership, and health system management.
Responsibilities
- Directs the ministry of chaplains and manages 24/7 chaplaincy coverage through staffing, scheduling, and supporting chaplain availability.
- Ensures pastoral/spiritual care meets the age-specific and developmental needs of patients.
- Provides chaplaincy support for end-of-life care and coordinates family visitation.
- Develops and maintains departmental policies and procedures, aligning with professional standards of practice.
- Collaborates with all hospital and clinic departments as a member of the treatment team to address patient and family needs.
- Administers the operational budget, prepares it for submission to the VP for approval, and monitors spending monthly.
- Manages department volunteers, ensuring screening and administrative requirements are met.
- Actively participates in the Spiritual Care Council of CHRISTUS Health and leadership teams of CHRISTUS St. Vincent.
- Serves on the CHRISTUS St. Vincent System Ethics Committee.
- Acts as a liaison between the Catholic Church, the local Catholic community, and other faith communities.
- Facilitates department and hospital orientation for visiting clergy.
- Oversees Associate Spiritual Care support services, including designing and implementing rituals, rounding, creating sacred spaces, Spa for the Soul, and the Lavender Cart.
- Maintains compliance with CHRISTUS St. Vincent Key Leader Behaviors.
- Conducts orientation for new associates, providing training on Spiritual Care, Ethics, and commissioning.
- Coordinates Liturgical Worship and attends to events of the Liturgical Seasons (e.g., Lent, Ash Wednesday, Advent) with the Priest.
Requirements
- Master of Divinity or Master’s in Theology from an accredited university or seminary.
- Minimum of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.
- Three years of experience as a professional chaplain (five years preferred).
- Two years of experience as a department manager or leader preferred.
- Knowledge of the healthcare environment, including its challenges and opportunities.
- Ability to promote collaboration, open communication, and team spirit.
- Ability to take initiative and accept responsibility.
- Skills in managing and overseeing key functions of the Spiritual Care Department.
- Ability to provide effective pastoral/spiritual care.
- Skills in establishing and maintaining working relationships with hospital administrators, departmental leaders, associates, and community members.
- Skills in organizing, writing, and public speaking.
- Ability to use goal-setting techniques effectively.
- Competence with personal computers and various programs/applications.
- Ability to use paging and telephone equipment.
Qualifications
- Member of the Roman Catholic Church (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Ethical and Religious Directives #22).
- Certification in Chaplaincy from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Association for Professional Chaplains (APC), or equivalent.
