Manager of E.D.
About the role
The Manager of Emergency Department (ER) under the direction of the CNO, is responsible for service development, personnel management, and resource allocation to ensure high quality patient care in the Emergency Unit. This position assumes 24-hour administrative responsibility for critical care nursing service functions and collaborates with other departments to address ongoing issues impacting departmental and organizational goals.
Responsibilities
- Assures consistent high quality patient care in the Emergency Unit
- Develops and implements department plans including performance improvement activities and compliance with current regulations
- Manages the Emergency Disaster Preparedness program in the unit
- Communicates the hospital’s mission, vision, and values to all staff
- Provides leadership and guidance to other leaders and staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management, and outcome achievement
- Defines performance objectives and metrics for the department and assesses staff competence
- Demonstrates a commitment to a healthy work environment by modeling desired behaviors and encouraging them in others
- Demonstrates the ability to cope with and manage change, as well as help others do the same
- Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem solve ongoing issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and/or patient care delivery
- Demonstrates fiscal accountability for department resources and achieves outcomes within allocated resources
- Incorporates quality improvement data and/or patient satisfaction data into departmental goals
- Defines standards of the Emergency department and develops processes to measure and ensure consistent compliance
- Develops, implements, and evaluates an ongoing ER program which assures quality patient care consistent with the Hospital mission
- Maintains compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety
- Monitors patient satisfaction in the ER department
- Accurately identifies real/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions with follow-through and communication
- Serves as a resource to nurses and house supervisors within and across service lines
- Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations
- Manages the fiscal management of the department; assures proper utilization of organization’s financial resources
- Effectively communicates departmental, organization, and industry information to staff
- Attains all agreed-to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission
- Follows progressive disciplinary action process (or oversees subordinates in doing so) in order to maintain productivity and/or performance standards
- Develops, prioritizes, and defends a capital equipment budget in collaboration with the service's medical chairman and nurse managers
- Ensures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards
- Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations
- Manages the fiscal management of the department; assures proper utilization of organization’s financial resources
- Effectively communicates departmental, organization, and industry information to staff
- Attains all agreed-to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission
- Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives
- Responsible for ensuring that all Disaster and Mass Casualty requirements are met as required by our HRSA Grant and ensuring we are all educated and officially trained as required for Disaster preparedness
- Participates in departmental project management, assuming a leadership role as warranted, in order to equitably assume these responsibilities with peer directors
- Interprets/represents the practice and role of the Nursing Department to allied health care professionals and physicians effectively
Requirements
- ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing)
- BS in Nursing preferred
- MS desired (in administrative services preferred)
- 2 to 5 years of Emergency Room experience with progressive management responsibility
- 2 to 5 years in an administrative management role, preferably with a volume greater than 25,000 visits/year in a hospital Emergency department
- Active California Registered Nurse license
- ACLS, BCLS, NRP, PALS, MAB and Basic Dyshythmia Cert preferred
